Christy is a 2025 biographical drama about real boxer Christy Martin: her rise in women’s boxing, her abusive relationship with trainer and husband Jim Martin, and her survival of his 2010 attempt to kill her. Sydney Sweeney plays Christy, and the film draws on events from Martin’s life while shaping them into a dramatic story.
Is Christy based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on the life of Christy Martin, who became one of the most recognizable figures in women’s boxing during the 1990s. The distributor’s synopsis describes her path from small-town West Virginia into boxing under Jim Martin’s guidance, as well as the struggles she faced beyond the ring, including questions of family and identity. Black Bear’s official film page presents the story as one of resilience and reclaiming her life.

That real-life foundation does not make every scene a documentary record. The film is a dramatization, and its scenes and dialogue should be understood as cinematic choices unless independently documented.
How Christy Martin rose in women’s boxing
Martin’s prominence in the mid-1990s helped draw attention to women’s boxing and contributed to the sport’s greater visibility and legitimacy, according to TIME’s account of Martin’s life and the film. The ring is only one part of the story the movie tells: it also examines the influence Jim Martin had over her career and the abuse she experienced in their relationship.

What happened between Christy and Jim Martin?
Jim Martin was Christy’s trainer and manager before becoming her husband. Their relationship was abusive. In 2010, he attempted to kill her, stabbing and shooting her. The Associated Press reported that he was sentenced to 25 years in prison; TIME also reports that he later died in prison. These are reported facts about the attack and its aftermath, distinct from how the film chooses to stage or frame those events. The Associated Press’s report from the film’s Toronto premiere and TIME’s account provide context.
The story’s violence is not the whole of Martin’s life. The film’s distributor frames it around survival and reclaiming agency, while the reported history also includes Martin’s boxing career and the relationship that shaped, and harmed, her life outside the ring.

What the filmmakers say about accuracy and portrayal
Co-writer Mirrah Foulkes told TIME, “It was important to us to try and stick as close to historical accuracy as we could.” That is the filmmakers’ stated intention, not proof that every scene is exact. Martin participated in shaping the film as a consultant, as the AP reported, but consultation alone does not turn a scripted feature into a verified record of every conversation or event.
Director David Michôd told The Guardian that Martin’s story offered “the opportunity the movie presented to explore how these coercive control relationships function.” Foulkes also told the newspaper she wanted to humanize Jim without justifying his actions. That distinction matters: giving a character complexity is not an excuse for abuse or an assertion that the people harmed by it are responsible.

Who made Christy, and when was it released?
David Michôd directed the 2025 film and co-wrote its screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes; Katherine Fugate is credited with the story. Sweeney stars as Christy Martin, with Ben Foster as Jim Martin. The listed cast also includes Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian. The official page identifies the film as a 2025 production. At its September 2025 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, the AP reported that distributor Black Bear planned a U.S. theatrical release for November 7, 2025, a date also shown on the official film page.
The AP reported that Sweeney also produced the film. For the boxing scenes, she said she trained three times a day for two to three months with a boxing coach, nutritionist, and weight trainers. That describes her reported preparation for this role, not a general training prescription.
