Totoro is not confirmed to be based on any particular real animal. Studio Ghibli’s official film information presents him as a character in Hayao Miyazaki’s fantasy film, without assigning him a real-world species or naming an animal as his design model.
Is Totoro a real animal?
No. Totoro is a fictional creature in My Neighbor Totoro, not a character officially identified as a member of a real-world species. The film’s official Studio Ghibli entry provides production and release details but does not classify Totoro as an animal or say that a particular species inspired him. Studio Ghibli’s official film record credits Hayao Miyazaki as the film’s writer and director and dates its Japanese release to April 16, 1988.
What animals does Totoro resemble?
Viewers may interpret Totoro’s appearance as having features reminiscent of familiar animals. Those comparisons are visual impressions, not a confirmed explanation of his design. The official information reviewed does not identify Totoro as an owl, cat, bear, tanuki, or any other species, so none of those should be stated as the answer.
Did Hayao Miyazaki say what animal inspired Totoro?
The official pages reviewed do not provide a creator statement naming a particular animal inspiration. That means the answer is not established by those sources; it does not prove Miyazaki never discussed the design elsewhere. Without a verifiable primary statement, claims that Totoro was definitively modeled on a specific animal should be treated as unconfirmed.

Where can you look at Totoro’s artwork?
Readers interested in the film’s visual design can explore VIZ’s The Art of My Neighbor Totoro, a hardcover art book. It is a way to view artwork associated with the film, not evidence that Totoro represents a particular animal. Studio Ghibli’s international publications listing also includes books related to the film.
