The ruling was about discovery: it did not decide whether Jolie’s sale of her interest violated an agreement or whether either party’s account of their negotiations was true.
What did the May 2024 order require?
Contemporaneous reporting on court documents said Jolie had 60 calendar days to produce responsive, non-privileged materials, including NDAs, from 2014 through February 17, 2022. The time period explains the “eight years” in headlines; it does not mean the judge ordered production of every private communication from those years. The reported order concerned material responsive to Pitt’s request, subject to privilege and the order’s scope. Source
The ruling was a document-production decision, not a finding about the merits of the winery dispute. It did not establish that the sale was unlawful, that an agreement was breached, or that the NDAs supported either side’s broader allegations.
Why did Pitt seek the NDAs, and how did Jolie respond?
Pitt’s motion argued that NDAs Jolie signed or asked others to sign could bear on her explanation for why negotiations broke down over his proposed NDA and a buyout. That was Pitt’s argument for why the documents mattered; it was not a judicial finding that they proved his account. Pitt’s motion

How the discovery dispute fits the winery lawsuit
The lawsuit concerns the former couple’s interests in Château Miraval, a French estate and wine business. The parties have made competing claims about Jolie’s sale of her interest and the circumstances surrounding the transaction. Subsequent coverage described other discovery disputes: a May 2026 ruling reportedly denied Pitt access to private emails over which Jolie asserted privilege; June 2026 coverage reported a ruling allowing buyer-side witnesses to be examined; and September 2026 coverage reported that Pitt sought additional financial records and Jolie opposed the request.
