What is The AI Doc about?
The documentary’s full title is The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist. Sundance describes it as a father-to-be’s exploration of both artificial intelligence’s existential dangers and its promise, and identifies Charlie Tyrell and Daniel Roher as directors. Sundance’s festival guide gives that official synopsis; Focus Features’ release announcement also credits Tyrell and Roher as co-directors and announced a U.S. theatrical release for March 27, 2026.
That framing is broader than Kessler’s headline. The film presents itself as engaging with both risk and possibility, while the opinion piece argues that its treatment does not give those sides persuasive or proportionate weight.
Why does Kessler call it a documentary for doomers?
Kessler says he watches documentaries alert to political messaging. In his view, the film moves between optimistic and fearful claims in a way that amounts to false balance, while also relying on predictions he considers extravagant. His core complaint is that the documentary does not make a strong case for AI’s productive economic potential or the wealth it might create.

He sums up his reaction with a comparison to comedy: “After watching, I became convinced that the mockumentary ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ (1984) had more credibility.” That is Kessler’s pointed opinion, not evidence that the documentary’s claims have been independently disproved.
Kessler’s article also reports remarks attributed to people featured in the documentary, including a warning about whether children will reach high school and a prediction of a “glorious period of human transformation.” Those are quotations as presented in his review; they have not been independently checked against a film transcript here.

Is the film balanced about AI?
There is no neutral answer established by the available descriptions. Sundance and Focus Features characterize the project as exploring both AI’s dangers and its promise. Kessler, by contrast, argues that its execution tilts toward doom and neglects the economic upside. A separate March 27, 2026 review at Uprisera criticizes the film for insufficiently challenging technology executives and underrepresenting present-day harms. That is another reviewer’s interpretation, not independent proof of the film’s balance.

- Does the film weigh potential benefits against risks, or merely place opposing claims side by side?
- Does it emphasize catastrophic future scenarios, nearer-term effects, or both?
- How critically does it examine claims from technology executives as well as from AI critics?
- Does its personal story as a father-to-be clarify the stakes, or distract from the analysis?
These are useful critical lenses, not settled findings about whether the documentary succeeds.
