On August 29, 2020, Brazilian singer Ana Carolina used a drive-in concert in São Paulo and her social media to draw attention to lesbian visibility. In remarks reported at the event, she affirmed lesbian women’s place in society and called for respect. The date marks Brazil’s National Lesbian Visibility Day, associated with a 1996 seminar—not the separate Lesbian Pride Day observed on August 19.

Her approach connected a public performance with personal accounts from fans. Rather than treating visibility as an abstract slogan, the concert and online posts gave space to lesbian women’s stories.
What Ana Carolina said
Portal POPline attributed the following remarks to Ana Carolina at the concert:
#1 Best Overall
“A data de hoje reforça a existência da mulher lésbica e seu lugar na sociedade. Nós não somos invisíveis. Não adianta fingir que a gente não existe, porque a gente existe, a gente atua, a gente tem opinião. Nós queremos respeito. Eu resolvi abrir esse espaço no show e nas minhas redes sociais hoje para dar visibilidade da maneira que eu mais acredito, que é pelo amor.”
In English, she said that the date reinforces lesbian women’s existence and place in society; that they are not invisible, exist and have opinions; and that they deserve respect. She described opening space at the show and on her social media to create visibility in the way she believed in most: through love. This English rendering is for understanding, not an official translation.
The wording is attributed to the event by POPline’s report; it is not presented here as a verified transcript from a primary recording.
Why Brazil observes National Lesbian Visibility Day on August 29
Brazil observes National Lesbian Visibility Day on August 29. Government accounts associate the date with the first National Lesbian Seminar, held in Rio de Janeiro on August 29, 1996. The Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship and a 2026 Agência Gov report identify that seminar as the historical reference for the observance.
Rank #3
The date centers recognition of lesbian women and their presence in public and social life. Ana Carolina’s 2020 remarks echoed that purpose by insisting on existence, participation, opinion and respect.

Brazil also observes Lesbian Pride Day on August 19. The Ministry of Women links that date to a 1983 protest at Ferro’s Bar in São Paulo, where activists objected to a ban on distributing the lesbian publication ChanacomChana. Its account distinguishes that history from August 29’s connection to the 1996 National Lesbian Seminar.

| Date | Observance | Historical reference in government accounts |
|---|---|---|
| August 19 | Lesbian Pride Day | 1983 protest at Ferro’s Bar in São Paulo, connected to the restriction on distributing ChanacomChana. |
| August 29 | National Lesbian Visibility Day | First National Lesbian Seminar, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. |
The Ministry of Women’s account of Lesbian Pride Day covers the August 19 history and distinguishes the two dates. They are related to lesbian history and recognition, but they are not interchangeable.
