Agatha All Along uses tarot both as Lilia Calderu’s divination practice and as a storytelling device. In Episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” her final reading reveals that Rio Vidal is Death. The spread was created for the series rather than taken intact from a traditional layout, so its meaning comes from the show’s choices as well as tarot symbolism.
Why tarot matters to Lilia
Lilia Calderu is the coven’s divination witch and a tarot reader. Patti LuPone described her as a “Sicilian witch who started out as a bathhouse singer and ended up being a tarot card reader” in D23’s coverage. The practice is therefore part of Lilia’s character, not merely decorative imagery: tarot gives the series a way to stage how she perceives time, fate and the people around her.
That role becomes central in Episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine.” The episode’s non-linear storytelling makes Lilia’s trial a puzzle for both her and the viewer, and tarot becomes the means through which the mystery reaches its decisive recognition.
The spread was made for the series
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer told TheWrap that the production did not use a standard, pre-existing spread: “No, no, no. We’re going to make up our own spread, and we’re going to do the spread with diligence and and we will be faithful to the meanings of the card. But we will make it our own.”

That distinction matters when interpreting the scene. The creators aimed to respect card meanings, but the layout and its dramatic function belong to the show. A viewer can compare familiar tarot symbolism with what the episode says or shows, but should not assume each card’s position follows a conventional spread or that every image has a creator-confirmed, one-to-one explanation. Tarot meanings can also vary by deck, orientation and reading context.
What Lilia’s final reading reveals
The crucial answer is that Lilia recognizes Rio as Death. The Los Angeles Times’ report on Episode 7 describes Lilia seeing her traveling companion’s identity during her final tarot reading. The episode’s title, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” points toward that reveal, while the reading makes the connection explicit within the story.

The significance is not that a generic tarot rule proves Rio’s identity. Rather, the show places Lilia’s divination practice at the center of her trial and uses the reading as the moment she understands who has been beside her. That is the plot fact; broader connections between individual cards, Lilia’s history and the episode’s themes are interpretation unless the episode itself states them.
How to read the cards without overstating what the show confirms
- Start with the scene: Separate what a card is called, shown or associated with in the episode from meanings you bring from other tarot traditions.
- Keep the layout in context: Schaeffer confirmed the spread was devised for the series, so a position in Lilia’s reading should not automatically be mapped onto a traditional layout.
- Mark interpretation as interpretation: A card may suggest a character arc or foreshadow an event, but that does not make the connection an explicitly confirmed explanation.
- Anchor the outcome in the episode: The established reveal is Lilia’s recognition that Rio is Death; a complete authoritative chart of every card, position and intended meaning is not provided in the cited creator commentary.
Marvel’s official series materials describe the Witches’ Road as a magical series of trials, placing Lilia’s reading within the show’s larger trial structure (Marvel’s series page; The Walt Disney Company’s production feature).
