The studio’s history also includes a 2010 bankruptcy filing and Miller’s later federal guilty plea and prison sentence. Those are connected events, but the company, its Pittsburgh premises and Dance Moms are not the same thing.
What happened to the Pittsburgh studio?
In December 2022, Miller sold the Penn Hills property associated with her well-known Pittsburgh dance studio. In a public explanation reported by E! News on January 25, 2023, she said she had sold the building, not her name, brand or life’s work. E! News reported Miller’s explanation of the sale.
Local reporting said the former studio premises were expected to become a daycare center. That describes the planned use of the property, not the fate of every business or activity associated with Miller’s name. WTAE covered the former studio and its auction.
How the bankruptcy and criminal case fit in
The 2010 bankruptcy filing
In 2010, Miller filed a bankruptcy petition seeking to reorganize debts from operating the Abby Lee Miller Dance Studio, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The later federal case addressed income from television appearances, masterclass events, merchandise and apparel that prosecutors said she had not fully disclosed during the bankruptcy proceedings. The guilty plea and sentence
In June 2016, Miller pleaded guilty to concealing assets from the bankruptcy court and failing to report an international currency transaction. On May 9, 2017, she was sentenced to one year and one day in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. The sentence also included a $120,000 money judgment and a $40,000 fine, according to the Justice Department. The Justice Department’s guilty-plea announcement describes the charges.
Did Miller sell the company, or did the company close?
The reported transaction concerned the Pittsburgh real estate. Miller explicitly distinguished the property from her name and brand; the sale by itself therefore does not show that she sold the company. The company’s official website describes the Abby Lee Dance Company historically as the resident competition team of Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio in Pittsburgh. That description is historical, however, and does not establish whether a regular studio or team operates today. The company website is the source for that historical description.

The available reporting establishes the sale of the Pittsburgh premises, but does not establish the company’s present-day operating arrangements elsewhere. It is more accurate to separate the confirmed property sale from claims that the company definitively ended or continues to run a studio.

- The company and brand: The name and identity Miller said she retained after selling the building.
