Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on December 1, 2023. It is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, not a continuation of that film’s ending. It follows young Furiosa after she is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers and drawn into a war between two warlords. The film’s original theatrical release date was May 24, 2024.
What the trailer sets up
The trailer introduces the film’s official premise, which Ars Technica reproduced when it reported on the first footage:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Three things in that premise shape everything else in the trailer. The first is the loss: Furiosa begins the story removed from the Green Place, the home that Fury Road returns her to the idea of. The second is Dementus and his Biker Horde, who hold her after the abduction. The third is the Citadel and Immortan Joe, whose rivalry with Dementus turns Furiosa’s survival into a fight between two tyrants. The film’s full title is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is the name to use when searching for it.

Is Furiosa a prequel to Fury Road?
Yes. Furiosa focuses on the earlier life of Imperator Furiosa, so it covers events before the 2015 film rather than what happens after it. Variety describes it as the fifth entry in the Mad Max franchise. The table below compares the two films on the points that matter for chronology and viewing order.
| Point of comparison | Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) | Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga |
|---|---|---|
| Place in the story | The main story of Furiosa’s escape with Max | Earlier life; a prequel to Fury Road |
| Furiosa’s life stage | Adult Furiosa | Young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne (per Netflix’s cast list) |
| Point of view | Events of the 2015 film | Origin story: how Furiosa comes to be where Fury Road finds her |
| Awards record | 10 Oscar nominations and 6 Oscar wins (per Ars Technica, 2023) | Not stated; the Oscar figures above apply only to Fury Road |
Watching in chronological order means starting with Furiosa and then moving to Fury Road. The release order runs the other way, since Fury Road came out first.

The shiny, chrome look and the Fury Road crew
The title of this article refers to the trailer’s bright, metallic first impression. The footage was unveiled at CCXP in Brazil in December 2023, where Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth appeared alongside Miller. Variety also names three returning Fury Road collaborators: Margaret Sixel (editor), Jenny Beavan (costume designer), and Junkie XL (composer). Their presence explains why the film feels connected to the earlier movie in craft and tone. It does not by itself establish any specific technical claim about how the trailer’s images were made.
