What did Stephen Collins publicly admit?
His 2014 statement
In October 2014, after reports about recordings involving alleged encounters between 1973 and 1994, Collins issued a statement to People. TIME reproduced his words: “Forty years ago, I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret.” The sentence was Collins’s description of his conduct; it was not a court finding.
What he told Katie Couric
In a later interview with Katie Couric, ABC reported that Collins acknowledged sexually abusing three female children. He said his last transgression was in 1994. Those dates and details should be understood as Collins’s account as reported by ABC, rather than as an independently established judicial record.

What happened after the admission?
Police investigations
The Los Angeles Times reported that police in New York and Los Angeles began investigating Collins in 2012 after allegations were made to police. An investigation records that authorities examined allegations; it does not itself prove guilt. The reporting reviewed for this article does not establish that Collins was prosecuted or convicted.
The cast revisited the series
In 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that former child actors from 7th Heaven addressed Collins’s publicly admitted misconduct as they began Catching Up With the Camdens, a podcast built around rewatching the series. Their discussion placed the admission in the context of the program’s continuing cultural legacy.

Admission, allegations and legal outcome are different claims
| Category | What the cited reporting supports |
|---|---|
| Public admission | ABC reported that Collins acknowledged sexually abusing three female children and placed his last transgression in 1994. |
| Earlier allegations | Reports about alleged encounters and allegations made to police preceded the 2014 public statements. |
| Police investigations | The Los Angeles Times reported investigations by police in New York and Los Angeles beginning in 2012. |
| Conviction | The sources reviewed do not establish a conviction. |
Why the wording matters
Descriptions of this case often collapse several stages into one: allegations, Collins’s own public statements, police inquiries and a court judgment. They are not interchangeable. The most precise account is that Collins publicly acknowledged sexually abusing three female children, that police investigations were reported, and that the reviewed coverage does not document a conviction.
