In a July 14, 2023 PEOPLE report, Andrews shared the first photos of Mack and described the nearly decade-long fertility journey, the surrogate’s birth, and the emotions of becoming a mother.
What Erin Andrews revealed in Mack’s first photos
PEOPLE published two exclusive images of Mack on July 14, 2023, several weeks after his birth. Andrews and Stoll had become parents to their first child after years of egg freezing, IVF and embryo losses. The couple have generally kept Mack’s privacy in mind while speaking publicly about how he joined their family.
The photos were part of a wider conversation about infertility and surrogacy rather than a simple celebrity birth announcement. Andrews explained why they pursued another route to parenthood and what the experience felt like from the intended mother’s perspective.
Andrews’s fertility and IVF timeline
Her interviews describe a process that stretched across almost a decade. The dates below reflect how Andrews recounted them in interviews and in a 2021 essay quoted by ABC News’ Good Morning America.

- 2016 cervical-cancer diagnosis: After her diagnosis, doctors urged additional fertility preservation. She underwent multiple surgeries while continuing efforts to create embryos.
- Repeated IVF attempts: Andrews has described several failed rounds. In her 2021 essay, she wrote, “This is my 7th one, and I’ve been going through these treatments since I was 35 years old.” She said that by the seventh or eighth round, she no longer wanted to stay quiet about what treatment involved.
- 2020 decision to pursue surrogacy: During the pandemic, Andrews and Stoll stopped attempting transfers into her uterus because they had few embryos left and began pursuing gestational surrogacy.
- 2021 first-match loss: Their first surrogate match ended after two embryo losses. Andrews said they met five potential carriers before finding the surrogate who ultimately carried Mack.
This account does not establish a single medical cause for every failed IVF attempt. It does show how cancer treatment, fertility preservation, repeated procedures and limited remaining embryos shaped the couple’s decisions.
Why Andrews speaks openly about surrogacy
Andrews initially worried that she might not manage the delivery room because she gets queasy. She ultimately held the surrogate’s hand during Mack’s birth. In an interview with Glamour published July 14, 2023, she described a photograph of herself kissing the surrogate’s head while Mack lay on the surrogate’s chest as “the picture of what surrogacy is.”
Her point was that the image showed cooperation and care, not distance from her child. Andrews has urged people not to treat surrogacy as something shameful. When friends or relatives disclose that they used a surrogate, she says people should “lean in a little bit” rather than react with suspicion or awkwardness.

She also recalled Stoll repeatedly affirming the family they were building: “It’s our baby. It’s our baby.” That response, in Andrews’s telling, helped keep the focus on Mack rather than on assumptions about who carried the pregnancy.

Eight months after Mack’s birth, The Bump interviewed Andrews about returning to her work as an NFL sideline reporter. In the April 3, 2024 interview, she said Stoll, Fox Sports colleagues, a nanny and friends form the support system that allows her to work and parent.
She acknowledged feeling guilty about missing bath time, dinner and first-time activities. At the same time, she said she remains grateful that Mack is here. Her comments present those emotions as simultaneous rather than contradictory: gratitude does not erase the sadness that can accompany an unpredictable work schedule.

Andrews also described how much guidance she seeks as a first-time mother: “I honestly feel like I haven’t been able to make a decision about Mack without my friends or our nanny…” She questioned the idea that instinct alone supplies every answer, noting that people often tell new parents to “trust your gut” while she wants evidence and practical advice as well.

Andrews told The Bump that when she and Stoll chose surrogacy, “we knew we had to go formula.” She said they researched products and selected Enfamil Enspire Optimum, which the brand describes as containing lactoferrin, a protein also found in breast milk and colostrum.
Those remarks appeared in connection with Enfamil’s “Bottle Up” campaign, which discusses infertility, mom guilt and difficult parts of parenthood. Andrews’s product choice and the campaign are reported personal and promotional context, not medical advice or proof that one formula is medically superior for every infant. Families should discuss feeding decisions with their own clinicians.

Organizations and infertility context she has named
Family Match Consulting
Andrews said Family Match Consulting was among the organizations involved in pairing her with the surrogate. Surrogacy agencies and matching services can differ by location, screening process, legal structure and intended-parent eligibility, so anyone considering one should confirm its current services and requirements directly.
Baby Quest
She also mentioned Baby Quest, a nonprofit that raises funds and selects families or individuals for infertility assistance. Eligibility rules, geographic reach, grant amounts and application schedules can change; prospective applicants should verify the nonprofit’s current criteria before relying on it.
The wider prevalence of infertility
ABC News’ Good Morning America cited the World Health Organization’s 2023 estimate that nearly one in six people worldwide experience infertility during their lifetime. That is a global population statistic, not a measurement of Andrews’s individual medical history or of the likelihood that any particular treatment will succeed.
What the public record shows
Through the April 2024 interview, Andrews’s account connects five parts of one family-building story: years of fertility treatment, a decision to use a gestational surrogate, an active presence at the birth, the public release of Mack’s first photos, and the continuing work of parenting alongside a demanding sports career. Her message is that surrogacy can be a deliberate, loving way to build a family and that parents may need substantial emotional and practical support after the birth as well as before it.
