The 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show paused its Tuesday-night competition at Madison Square Garden on February 3, 2026, for a posthumous video tribute to Catherine O’Hara—only four days after the actor’s death. The montage celebrated O’Hara’s career and highlighted her beloved role as Cookie Fleck in the 2000 mockumentary Best in Show.
The arena screen concluded with a message calling O’Hara “a true legend, timeless talent, and icon,” according to contemporaneous entertainment and event coverage. The tribute was especially fitting: in Best in Show, O’Hara played a dog-show competitor whose Norwich Terrier, Winky, takes part in the film’s fictional competition.
What happened at Westminster
Westminster’s tribute took place during the second night of the 150th annual dog show, before or around the Terrier Group proceedings. Coverage described a career montage that connected O’Hara’s wider comedy work with Best in Show, Christopher Guest’s 2000 mockumentary about the personalities, rivalries and anxieties surrounding a fictional dog show.
After the montage, the screen displayed a dedication describing O’Hara as “a true legend, timeless talent, and icon.” That wording has been reported by entertainment outlets, including TMZ, and corroborated by other coverage. Westminster’s official retrospective confirms the milestone event and its competition results, but an official Westminster posting of the full O’Hara tribute video was not located in the available research.

It was a memorial moment, not a live appearance, award presentation or formal induction. O’Hara had died several days earlier, and there is no evidence that the tribute announced a new Best in Show project, reunion or commercial partnership between the film and Westminster.
Why Best in Show was the natural focus
O’Hara’s connection to the Westminster setting was unusually direct. In Best in Show, she played Cookie Fleck, an exuberant competitor married to Gerry Fleck, played by her longtime comedy collaborator Eugene Levy. The couple travel with their Norwich Terrier, Winky, to the fictional Mayflower Dog Show.
Cookie is one of the film’s most memorable portraits of the human drama behind a supposedly dignified competition. Her nervous energy, emotional history and chaotic conversations with Gerry provide much of the movie’s comic momentum. The Flecks’ encounters with Cookie’s former lovers add another layer of absurdity to their attempt to present Winky successfully.
The film’s Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show is fictional. It should not be confused with the real Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which was founded in the 19th century and held its 150th annual event in 2026. Westminster provided the real-world setting for the tribute; it was not the competition depicted in the movie, and Cookie Fleck and Winky did not compete there.
Catherine O’Hara’s role as Cookie Fleck
O’Hara’s performance works because Cookie is both ridiculous and recognizable. She is intensely invested in the show, easily distracted by personal drama and unable to maintain the controlled composure that a formal dog competition appears to require. O’Hara plays those contradictions without reducing Cookie to a simple caricature.

Levy’s Gerry is Cookie’s tightly wound counterpart. Together, the Flecks embody Best in Show’s central joke: the dogs may be judged in the ring, but the owners bring the real rivalries, insecurities and theatrical behavior.
The film was directed by Christopher Guest and co-written by Guest and Eugene Levy. It runs approximately 90 minutes and was released in 2000. Major entertainment listings identify it as PG-13. The cast also includes Parker Posey, Michael McKean, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch, Fred Willard and other performers associated with the film’s improvised, character-driven ensemble style.
O’Hara died days before the tribute
The Associated Press reported that O’Hara died at her Los Angeles home on Friday, January 30, 2026, at age 71, following a brief illness. Her representatives at Creative Artists Agency confirmed the death to the AP.

That timing gave Westminster’s presentation the character of an immediate remembrance. The tribute was not a retrospective scheduled as part of a long-planned film promotion; it came just days after O’Hara’s death and used a setting closely associated with one of her most celebrated comedy performances.
O’Hara’s work with Guest and Levy extended beyond Best in Show. Her career included landmark television and film comedy, as well as dramatic and voice performances. Still, Cookie Fleck remains a particularly appropriate role to remember at a dog show because the character’s story is inseparable from the rituals, status concerns and eccentric human behavior of the competition.

The real 2026 Westminster competition
The tribute unfolded amid the actual 150th Westminster competition. The event culminated in a Best in Show victory for Penny, a Doberman Pinscher handled by Andy Linton, according to Westminster’s official recap.
Penny had won the Working Group before taking the overall title. The Terrier Group winner was Wager, a Smooth Fox Terrier handled by Amy Rutherford. Other finalists reported in coverage included Zaida the Afghan Hound, Graham the Old English Sheepdog, Cota the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, JJ the Lhasa Apso and Cookie the Maltese.

Those results are background rather than part of O’Hara’s tribute. Penny was the real 2026 Westminster winner; Winky is the Norwich Terrier belonging to the fictional Flecks in Best in Show. Keeping those two storylines separate matters, since O’Hara’s character did not own or show the Westminster champion.
Where to revisit O’Hara’s performance
For viewers who want to see the role that inspired the Westminster tribute, the most direct choice is the 2000 Best in Show film. A Best in Show DVD is a practical option for viewers who want a permanent physical copy, though the active edition, seller, region and availability should be checked before purchase.
A Best in Show Blu-ray is another possible physical format for viewers who prefer high-definition playback. Editions and stock can vary, so it is best treated as an alternative rather than a guaranteed specific release.

What the tribute meant
Westminster’s choice of footage made the memorial feel specific rather than generic. O’Hara was remembered not simply as a famous performer, but through a character whose world mirrored the event taking place in the arena. The real show’s polished presentation and the film’s affectionate parody met in the same room.
That connection also reflects what made Best in Show endure. The movie is ostensibly about dogs, but its lasting subject is the elaborate emotional world people build around competition. O’Hara’s Cookie Fleck captures that mixture of vanity, vulnerability and comic desperation with a performance that remains instantly recognizable more than two decades after the film’s release.
The February 3 tribute therefore worked on two levels: it acknowledged the recent loss of a major comedic talent and invited a dog-show audience to remember one of her most perfectly matched roles. The screen’s final description—“a true legend, timeless talent, and icon”—summed up the feeling of the moment without confusing the fictional show in Best in Show with Westminster’s real competition.
