The West Point Association of Graduates canceled the planned public ceremony honoring Tom Hanks as the 2025 recipient of the Sylvanus Thayer Award, according to reporting based on an email sent to West Point faculty. The cancellation applied to the scheduled ceremony and related celebration, not clearly to the award itself.
The available public record does not establish whether Hanks remained the 2025 recipient, received the award privately, or had the honor formally withdrawn. Reports from The Washington Post and The Associated Press described the ceremony as canceled but did not identify a replacement presentation or a formal rescission.
What happened
On June 11, 2025, the West Point Association of Graduates, or WPAOG, announced that Hanks would receive the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award. The award presentation was scheduled to take place during ceremonies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on September 25.

On September 5, WPAOG President and CEO retired Col. Mark Bieger told West Point faculty that the association, coordinating with the academy, “will not be holding the Thayer Award ceremony” as planned. The Washington Post reported that it reviewed and verified the email.
Bieger’s stated reason was that canceling the event would allow the academy to concentrate on its core mission of preparing cadets to “lead, fight, and win” as officers in the U.S. Army. The message did not say whether Hanks’s award had been revoked, whether it would be presented privately, or whether another ceremony would be arranged.
What was canceled?
The safest description is that the scheduled Sylvanus Thayer Award ceremony and associated public celebration were canceled. Reporting described the planned event as including a ceremony and parade intended to honor Hanks.
That is narrower than saying West Point “rescinded” or “revoked” the award. No authoritative public statement identified in the available reporting confirms that the award itself was withdrawn. Nor does the reporting confirm that Hanks received the medal in private or by another method.

What is the Sylvanus Thayer Award?
The Sylvanus Thayer Award is the West Point Association of Graduates’ highest honor for a non-West Point graduate. Established in 1958, it is presented to an outstanding U.S. citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest reflect West Point’s ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country.”
WPAOG’s June announcement said Hanks was selected for his contributions to the public portrayal of American service members, his support for veterans and their families, and work connected with the American space program and government-related causes. The association’s announcement—not an independent investigation—provided the reasons for his selection.
Barack Obama received the 2024 Sylvanus Thayer Award, according to WPAOG. That recent history is politically relevant to some observers, but the contrast does not by itself demonstrate why the 2025 ceremony was canceled.
Why had West Point chosen Tom Hanks?
WPAOG pointed to several parts of Hanks’s film and public-service career:

- He executive-produced the military-focused miniseries Band of Brothers (2001), The Pacific (2010), and Masters of the Air (2024).
- He wrote and starred in Greyhound (2020), portraying a U.S. Navy commander.
- He served as a national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial.
- He supported Senator Bob Dole’s fundraising effort for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial.
- He was inducted as an honorary member of the U.S. Army Rangers Hall of Fame for portraying an Army Ranger commander.
Those accomplishments explain the association’s stated rationale for selecting Hanks. They do not resolve why the ceremony was later canceled.
Political reaction and broader context
The cancellation came during a period of wider political and institutional tensions involving West Point and the Trump administration, according to The Washington Post. The report placed the decision within broader disputes affecting the academy.
On September 8, Trump praised the cancellation as an “important move” and described Hanks as “woke.” Reporting also noted Hanks’s support for Democratic candidates and causes. That sequence made the political dimension difficult to ignore, but WPAOG’s written explanation did not explicitly say that Hanks’s political views caused the cancellation.
The documented facts therefore support a distinction between context and established cause: the event was canceled amid political tensions, and Trump celebrated the decision afterward, while the association’s stated reason focused on the academy’s military mission.

What remains unclear
The available reporting leaves several important questions unanswered:
- Did Hanks formally remain the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award recipient?
- Was the medal presented privately, mailed, deferred, or withdrawn?
- Did Hanks or his representatives accept, reject, or comment on the award?
- Did West Point or WPAOG issue a later explanation beyond the faculty email?
Until an official statement answers those questions, it is inaccurate to say definitively that West Point revoked the award—or that Hanks received it privately. What is established is the cancellation of the public ceremony scheduled for September 25, 2025.
