The West Point Association of Graduates canceled the public ceremony planned for Sept. 25, 2025, honoring Tom Hanks as the year’s Sylvanus Thayer Award recipient. The association said the decision, made in coordination with the Academy, would let West Point focus on preparing cadets for Army service. The available reports establish that the ceremony was canceled, but do not establish whether Hanks’s award was rescinded or conferred another way.
Why was the Tom Hanks ceremony canceled?
In an email reported by the Associated Press, West Point Association of Graduates president and CEO Mark Bieger said canceling the event “allows the Academy to continue its focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.” The association apologized for the cancellation, according to The Washington Post.
That is the organization’s stated rationale. Reports placed the decision amid political controversy, but the cited coverage does not establish that political pressure caused it. President Donald Trump praised the cancellation after it was reported; his later reaction does not establish that he prompted the decision.
Was Hanks’s award revoked?
The reports establish that the association had selected Hanks as the 2025 recipient and canceled the planned public ceremony. They do not establish whether the award itself was withdrawn, privately presented, or otherwise conferred. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the award as definitively revoked—or to say Hanks received it—based on these reports.

What is the Sylvanus Thayer Award?
The award recognizes an outstanding U.S. citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest reflect West Point’s motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.” The Associated Press reports that it has been given annually since 1958.
In announcing Hanks’s selection in June 2025, association board chairman Robert McDonald praised his portrayal of service members and support for veterans, their caregivers and families, and the American space program. McDonald said: “Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans.”

On Sept. 8, 2025, Trump praised the decision in a social-media post, writing, “Important move!” He also called Hanks and other recipients “WOKE” and urged the Academy Awards and other award shows to review their standards. That was Trump’s public reaction, separate from the mission-focused reason the association gave for canceling the ceremony.
