Public reporting documented a tabloid story that Meghan Markle and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were jealous rivals. It does not establish that Prince William or Catherine actually felt jealous. Prince Harry later said the press quickly turned the women into opponents, describing it as “Meghan vs. Kate.”
Where did the jealousy story come from?
After Prince Harry and Meghan married in May 2018, William—Harry’s best man—was soon drawn into coverage portraying Meghan and Catherine as rivals. The Washington Post’s timeline of the brothers’ relationship says tabloids reported jealousy between the women over Meghan “stealing the limelight,” alongside claims that Meghan was driving a wedge between the brothers.
Those reports show that a jealousy narrative circulated; they are not evidence of either William’s or Catherine’s private feelings. The public record cited here does not establish that either was jealous of Meghan.
What did Harry say about the rivalry framing?
Harry criticized the way coverage cast the women against each other. In remarks recounted by the Washington Post, he said, “Very quickly it became Meghan vs. Kate,” and blamed media misinformation. He also said tensions were high after the wedding and that the four held a meeting to address grievances.

The Associated Press timeline and the Washington Post chronology place the announcement within the broader family dispute. It does not, by itself, explain the private motives of William or Catherine.
March 2021: Oprah interview adds further allegations
In their interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry and Meghan made allegations about their treatment within the royal institution. Meghan described a conversation about Archie’s skin color; afterward, William told a reporter, “We’re very much not a racist family,” as the Washington Post recounts. These statements are relevant to the broader dispute, but they are not evidence that William or Catherine felt jealous.

What did Meghan say about reports that Catherine cried?
Meghan disputed tabloid reports that she had made Catherine cry. The Washington Post recounts Meghan’s account that the reverse happened and that Catherine later apologized. That is Meghan’s description of the incident; it should not be presented as an independently established account or treated as proof of jealousy.

How should the claim be judged?
The key distinction is between a report that a story circulated and evidence that the story was true. Tabloid coverage framed Meghan and Catherine as competitors, while Harry publicly criticized that framing. The cited public statements and timelines provide context for tensions between the brothers and within the family, but none documents William or Catherine admitting to jealousy or establishes that motive.
The Royal Family’s official biography of the Prince of Wales identifies William and Catherine as the Prince and Princess of Wales and says they married on April 29, 2011. “Kate Middleton” remains a familiar name for readers, but Catherine is her current official style.
