NBC News reported that current and former Fox employees described concerns about Pete Hegseth’s drinking and on-air readiness. Their accounts, as summarized by Rolling Stone in a Yahoo-hosted article, were allegations from anonymous interviewees—not independently established findings. A Trump transition spokesperson denied them.
What NBC News reported
NBC News interviewed three current and seven former Fox employees, all of whom requested anonymity, according to a Rolling Stone summary hosted by Yahoo. The employees described observations and concerns; the summary does not identify them by name or provide independently verifiable documentation of the alleged events.
Accounts about alcohol and appearing on camera
Two interviewees said Hegseth smelled of alcohol before going on camera on more than a dozen occasions. Those two sources and another source also said he appeared on television after talking about being hungover. These are accounts attributed to the employees interviewed by NBC News, not verified findings about Hegseth’s conduct.
What employees meant by “babysit”
One current employee and two former employees said they felt they needed to “babysit” Hegseth, including by calling to make sure he did not oversleep. The summary also said none of the sources identified an occasion when he missed a scheduled appearance because of drinking.

What the report does—and does not—establish
The reported interviews establish that anonymous current and former Fox employees made these claims to NBC News, as described in the syndication summary. They do not, on the information available in that summary, independently establish that the alleged incidents occurred. The interview counts and occasions described are accounts from sources, not survey results or population statistics.
The summary also quotes Hegseth’s earlier memoir, In the Arena: Good Citizens, a Great Republic, and How One Speech Can Reinvigorate America, describing a pattern after deployment: “One beer leads to many, leads to self-medication, leads to ‘I’ve earned this.’” That passage is his own past writing as presented by Rolling Stone; it does not confirm the coworkers’ specific allegations.
