His worn Black Hero look can be read as a visual expression of isolation and strain, but the available official material does not assign a single confirmed symbolic meaning to every design.
Why Deku’s costume changes matter
Izuku is born without a Quirk, but All Might recognizes his heroic qualities and passes One For All to him. Yomiuri TV’s official character profile also emphasizes his powerful drive to save people. Read against that background, the costume sequence traces a shift: Izuku begins by trying to look like the hero he admires, then adapts his equipment to the abilities and fighting choices he is developing.
The practical changes are documented in costume descriptions; the broader symbolism is interpretation. In particular, no cited source establishes one definitive creator-intended meaning for every color, shape, or accessory.
Alpha: a homemade tribute to All Might
Izuku’s first suit, Alpha, is based on a hero costume he drew as a child and was made by his mother. Its green body, red boots, pointed cowl and smile-like respirator echo All Might’s recognizable image, as described in this costume overview.

- DARK DEKU: Hunt down the League of Villains with Total Anime Izuku Midoriya
- MY HERO ACADEMIA: 6.5-inch highly poseable figure is based on My Hero Academia
- 30+ ARTICULATION POINTS: Features 30+ points of articulation for dynamic play and display
- CUSTOMIZABILITY: Includes removable backpack, swappable faceplates, and alternate hands for customization
- SPECIAL ACCESSORY: Also includes energy effects to display Fa Jin and Blackwhip
The design can be read as an earnest attempt to become the kind of hero Izuku has admired since childhood. That is a visual interpretation, not a documented statement of authorial intent. At this stage, the suit’s most striking feature is its imitation of an ideal; later versions increasingly address the demands of actual combat.
Beta: a sturdier version of the original
After Alpha is damaged during early battle training, costume designers revise it. The overview describes Beta as darker teal and more robust in appearance, with extended knee protection, altered gloves and a more solid respirator. The silhouette remains recognizably connected to Alpha, but the suit looks better prepared to take punishment.
That makes Beta a transitional design: it preserves the first costume’s identity while responding to the fact that Izuku’s battles can damage the gear as well as the wearer.
Gamma: protection for Shoot Style
When Izuku develops Shoot Style, which relies more heavily on kicks, Gamma adds arm braces and reinforced Iron Soles. The equipment change follows a change in how he fights: his legs take on a larger role, and his arms need protection from the strain of his power.
Gamma is the clearest example of costume evolution as function rather than a simple visual refresh. The suit is being adapted to a technique Izuku has chosen and trained to use.

Delta: gloves for Air Force
A later version adds support gloves associated with Mei Hatsume. The costume overview says they help stabilize the direction of the shockwave produced by Izuku’s Air Force attacks. In practical terms, the gloves help him direct a ranged use of One For All rather than relying only on close-range strikes.
Delta therefore reflects another step in the same pattern: as Izuku expands how he can use his power, his costume gains equipment intended to make that use more controlled.
Epsilon and the Black Hero look: damage, concealment and a borrowed cape
During the Black Hero period, Izuku leaves U.A. and pursues villains alone. The official anime site announced his updated character design on February 4, 2023, ahead of the arc’s scheduled start in the February 11 broadcast (official announcement). The costume overview describes a backpack, a face-concealing mask and an earlier suit that is visibly worn and damaged. He also wears Gran Torino’s yellow cape around his neck like a scarf.
The contrast with the cleaner school-era designs supports a reading of isolation and accumulated strain: the hidden face and battered clothing make this look feel less like a student’s uniform and more like gear worn through relentless solo work. That reading is grounded in the story context and visible design, not a confirmed statement that the creators assigned those symbols explicitly.
Why does Deku wear Gran Torino’s cape?
The cited costume description identifies the yellow cape as Gran Torino’s and notes how Izuku wears it, but does not establish a definitive explanation of its symbolism. Its presence visibly ties the Black Hero look to someone from Izuku’s training and hero life, even as the damaged suit and concealed face distinguish this period from his earlier school designs.

Zeta: a battle-ready redesign for the final conflict
After the previous suit deteriorates, the costume overview describes a major redesign called Zeta. It has a near-black green palette, white lines that recall U.A. gym wear, leg armor, gloves supporting Air Force, and Gran Torino’s cape still worn around the neck.
These elements bring together school-era visual cues and equipment gathered through Izuku’s changing combat needs. It is reasonable to read the design as carrying both his connection to U.A. and the experience accumulated since Alpha, but the sources do not confirm a single intended message for the combination.

Anime costumes and game outfits are different things
Bandai Namco’s My Hero Ultra Rumble Season 3 page promotes a Full Bullet skill set for Midoriya and Kung Fu costumes for Deku, Bakugo and Todoroki. Those are game content and cosmetics, not evidence about the canonical anime costume sequence discussed here.
