Yes, McDonald’s Japan offered both characters in Happy Meal toy promotions in 2026—but not together in January. The January collection featured six Pompompurin toys. Hello Kitty appeared later, in a separate Sanrio Characters collection that began in April. Both promotions have ended, and the announcements do not establish availability outside Japan.
What was in the January 2026 Pompompurin Happy Meal collection?
McDonald’s Japan announced the Pompompurin set on January 9, 2026, with sales beginning January 16. The six toys celebrated the Sanrio character’s 30th anniversary. The promotion was planned to run for about four weeks, nationwide in Japan except at some locations. Toys were limited, could not be selected, and could be replaced by another toy after stock ran out. McDonald’s Japan’s announcement names Pompompurin—not Hello Kitty—as the character in this January collection.
January toy waves
| Distribution period | Toys |
|---|---|
| January 16–22 | Small-item container, rolling cart, and pencil cap |
| January 23–29 | Fork stand, clock-shaped memo stand, and beret-shaped ruler |
| From January 30 | Any of the six toys |
These designs paired character collectibles with small functional play items. The announcements do not establish that the toys were educational products or demonstrate developmental outcomes.
Digital content tied to the January set
A QR code on the package linked to “Pompompurin’s Happy Dancing!”, a rhythm game that required a McDonald’s official app login. Sanrio listed its availability as January 16, 2026, at 5:00 through February 22, 2026, at 23:59. A Pompompurin and Muffin in-store broadcast ran January 16 through February 5, with different times on weekdays and weekends or holidays. Those windows have passed. Details are on Sanrio’s January promotion page.

Hello Kitty was included in a separate McDonald’s Japan Sanrio Characters Happy Meal collection that began April 10, 2026. Its first wave had four toys, including a Pompompurin figure and a Hello Kitty dress-up figure. The second wave began April 24 with four more toys and a secret toy; the third began May 8 and distributed one of the nine toys. As with the January offer, toys were limited and could not be chosen.
This April–May collection also had a distinct QR-linked game, “Sanrio Characters Happy Watermelon Game,” available April 10 through May 24, 2026. Its toys, distribution, and game belonged to that later campaign—not to the January Pompompurin set. Sanrio’s April promotion page describes the collection.

Neither campaign establishes which collection was more popular or better. Their announcements document two different offers in Japan, not a January Hello Kitty return.
Can you still get the toys?
Both promotions and their associated game periods had ended by October 8, 2026. The official announcements do not establish that McDonald’s or Sanrio still has the toys in stock. Any current resale listing should be checked for the specific toy, condition, seller, and price; the promotion announcements do not verify present-day listings or sellers.
