In a February 8, 2024, appearance on Betches’ So Bad It’s Good with Ryan Bailey, Olivia explained that staying on the show mattered to the story it tells. “I think that if you’re going to idolize a lifestyle that promotes the dysfunction that we see, then you have to show the flip side,” she said. “You have to show what happens when someone walks away from it. You have to show what happens when someone questions it. Otherwise it’s just, it’s not the full story.” PEOPLE reported her comments.

Olivia also criticized the show’s portrayal of the Plaths’ fundamental Christianity as a “little purified, whitewashed, happy version of it,” calling that rendering “not realistic.” Her explanation framed her return as a chance to show a perspective the series might otherwise leave out, rather than simply as a continuation of her relationship with Ethan.
What Olivia meant by “reveling” in Kim’s disappointment
Olivia made the remark with a self-deprecating, joking edge. “I’m a petty bitch. I know that [Kim] thought that I wouldn’t be a part of Plathville anymore when Ethan and I got divorced and I know that she’s disappointed… I’m just reveling in that a tiny bit,” she said during the podcast appearance, as quoted by PEOPLE.

The comment was about what Olivia believed Kim expected after the split; it was not a report of Kim’s own public reaction. PEOPLE’s account also noted Olivia’s positive feelings toward members of the production crew, so the joke should not be read as a blanket rejection of everyone involved in making the show.
How the return fits the separation and divorce timeline
The couple’s relationship status and the show’s production are distinct parts of the story. PEOPLE reported that Ethan and Olivia publicly announced their separation in October 2023. Their joint divorce paperwork, filed in Carver County, Minnesota, on February 21, 2024, listed February 25, 2023, as their separation date. PEOPLE reported the filing and the date listed in the paperwork.
Olivia also described the personal stakes of ending the marriage while appearing on television: she said she had been “terrified of the ramifications of getting divorced with the public watching,” but called it “the best thing that ever happened to me,” according to the same PEOPLE report on her podcast appearance.

When PEOPLE published Olivia’s return comments on February 8, 2024, the outlet said Season 6 had not yet been officially announced. That was the status at the time—not the season’s eventual schedule. A later PEOPLE season preview, syndicated by Yahoo on June 13, listed July 16, 2024, as the premiere date. The preview also covered the season trailer.
