Spoilers for Welcome to Derry Season 1, Episode 7, “The Black Spot.” The penultimate episode is a major expansion of Stephen King’s Black Spot interlude, and its most disturbing horror is not supernatural: it is the racist violence Derry’s residents inflict on one another. The result is a devastating, ambitious chapter whose catastrophic centerpiece sometimes leaves its characters less room to breathe.

What happens in Welcome to Derry Episode 7?

“The Black Spot,” Season 1’s seventh episode, aired December 7, 2025. It opens with a 1908 sequence involving Bob Gray before returning to the town’s 1962 story. The central event is an attack on the Black Spot, a gathering place for Black airmen and their community. A racist mob comes looking for Hank Grogan and sets the venue ablaze. In the aftermath, Dick Hallorann helps people escape, and Rich dies saving Marge. The official synopsis also points to Dick helping uncover another artifact after the attack.

The episode makes the fire a turning point for the ensemble rather than an isolated spectacle. Ingrid Kersh is implicated in the events and believes that the entity appearing as Bob Gray is connected to her father. The story threads that eerie revelation through the human catastrophe, though the two strands carry different kinds of dread.

Is Episode 7 based on the Black Spot in Stephen King’s IT?

Yes. The episode adapts and substantially expands the Black Spot interlude in King’s novel. Andy Muschietti told TV Insider that the story is meant to confront what people can do to one another: “Humans are capable of doing things as bad or worse than this monster.” That is a creator’s account of the episode’s intent, not the only way a viewer can interpret it, but it fits the contrast the chapter draws between supernatural menace and a mob’s deliberate cruelty.

The adaptation’s expansion gives the fire more circumstances and character consequences than a brief source passage can provide. That makes the event feel embedded in the series’ ensemble and season arc, rather than simply illustrating a piece of Derry’s history. It also changes the dramatic balance: the Black Spot is not just a reference for readers of the novel, but the episode’s defining set piece.

Muschietti told TheWrap on December 7, 2025, “We started with The Black Spot being the big climatic moment of this arc of this story, even though there’s a third act after.” The remark helps explain why the hour gives the attack such scale while still leaving the season’s final chapter to come.

What works—and what doesn’t?

The emotional cost of the fire

The episode’s strongest choice is to make the attack matter to people we have followed, rather than treating destruction as atmosphere. Rich’s sacrifice gives the violence a painfully intimate consequence, and Dick’s effort to get people out makes his role in the aftermath concrete. The sequence’s emotional force comes from that human cost, not merely from the size of the disaster.

Ambition can crowd out character

The same concentration on the set piece creates the episode’s main weakness. The attack occupies so much dramatic space that some grounded character work has less room to develop. The Bob Gray material offers a strikingly different, eerie register, but its placement alongside the Black Spot’s historical horror can make the episode feel divided between a supernatural origin thread and a communal tragedy.

Staging and tone

The official episode podcast features Andy and Barbara Muschietti discussing emotional turns and mythology, production designer Paul Austerberry on the contrast between Bob Gray’s carnivalesque world and the Black Spot’s brief haven, and composer Benjamin Wallfisch on musical signatures and tonal textures. Those production perspectives illuminate the episode’s intended contrasts; they do not, by themselves, settle whether every transition or staging choice succeeds. One criticism in the professional reviews focused on an unconvincing long take, while other reactions praised the performances and the emotional impact.

Who dies in “The Black Spot”?

Rich dies while saving Marge during the Black Spot attack. The loss is one of the episode’s clearest character payoffs and a major consequence of the fire.

How have critics responded?

Professional reactions are mixed rather than uniformly celebratory. Some reviewers describe the episode as devastating and praise its performances, Rich’s sacrifice, or the Bob Gray backstory. Others argue that the large-scale sequence leaves too little space for grounded character work, or criticize clunky storytelling and the long take. Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 86% Tomatometer from seven reviews when accessed October 8, 2026; that is a changing aggregator snapshot, not an audience-preference measure or a settled consensus.

Is “The Black Spot” the best episode of Welcome to Derry so far?

It is a strong contender if “best” means the season’s most consequential and emotionally forceful chapter. Its adaptation gives King’s interlude room to shape the ensemble, and its focus on human violence makes the horror unusually pointed. But the episode’s scale comes at a cost: the time spent on the catastrophe can compress character work, and not every staging choice lands. It is more persuasive as a major turning point than as an unqualified best episode.
