Spoilers for episode 4 of IT: Welcome to Derry. The series says It came to Earth inside a falling star and became bound to the place that would become Derry. In the Indigenous story told in the episode, the entity is called the Galloo. That is the prequel’s expanded origin story—not a complete explanation supplied by Stephen King’s novel.

What does episode 4 reveal about It’s origin?

In the series’ account, It arrived on Earth inside a falling star. The Indigenous characters’ story identifies the entity as the Galloo, connecting the supernatural being to the land where Derry would later exist. This is the show’s clearest answer so far to the question of where It came from.

The episode’s reveal is reported in GamesRadar+’s recap of episode 4. It describes the show’s mythology; it should not be treated as a definitive explanation of every version of It in Stephen King’s fiction.

The scale is also deliberately immense. In an EL PAÍS interview, director and executive producer Andy Muschietti described the show’s intended origin mythology as reaching back to a comet’s arrival as far as three million years ago. That is his description of the fictional timeline, not a real-world scientific dating claim.

Is Pennywise an alien?

The falling-star account makes It an arrival from beyond Earth in the series’ mythology, but “alien” can suggest a familiar extraterrestrial creature with a fully known species, biology, or home world. The episode does not establish those details. It presents an ancient, otherworldly entity and a story about its arrival, while leaving its full nature unresolved.

How does the show’s origin compare with Stephen King’s novel?

King’s It gives the entity an otherworldly, macroverse-related context, but leaves much of its nature unexplained. The prequel builds on those clues with new adaptation mythology, including the falling-star account and the Galloo story. It expands the mystery rather than simply reproducing a complete origin already laid out in the novel.

Question IT: Welcome to Derry Stephen King’s novel
How did It arrive? Episode 4 presents its arrival inside a falling star; GamesRadar+’s recap describes this episode reveal. It has an otherworldly, macroverse-related origin, but the novel does not provide the same fully specified falling-star account; as discussed in Esquire’s interview with Muschietti.
What connects It to Derry? The Indigenous story calls the entity the Galloo and connects it to the place that becomes Derry; the detail is part of the series’ adaptation mythology, as summarized by GamesRadar+. The novel’s history of It and Derry is fragmentary rather than a complete, matching account; Muschietti discussed the adaptation’s relationship to King’s clues in Esquire.
Is Bob Gray a confirmed human origin? Bob Gray is a cryptic identity linked to Pennywise, but the series’ origin material does not resolve him into a complete human backstory; the Television Academy and Esquire interviews describe the question as open. The novel does not confirm a complete human origin for the clown; the Bob Gray connection remains part of the puzzle, as discussed in those creator interviews.
How much remains unexplained? The creators intend to answer some questions while keeping It partly unknowable; why it remains in Derry is still a central mystery, according to Muschietti’s interviews with Esquire and the Television Academy. The novel leaves much of It’s nature unexplained, a quality Muschietti says the adaptation wants to preserve in Esquire.

Who was Bob Gray?

Bob Gray is a name associated with It and Pennywise, but the name does not by itself prove that Pennywise began as an ordinary human clown. The novel does not give a complete human origin for the character, and the creators have described Bob Gray as an unresolved part of the story’s puzzle.

In a Television Academy interview, Muschietti described the original creative question as: “Wouldn’t it be great to make a movie about the origin of Pennywise, and how did it become the clown, and who the fuck was this cryptic character, Bob Gray?” The question is a useful guide to the prequel’s interests, not confirmation that Bob Gray has a settled human biography.

Why does It stay in Derry?

The episode’s account ties It to the place that becomes Derry, but the reason it remains there is still described as a central mystery. The series is a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 films and begins in 1962, which the Television Academy reports is 27 years before the first film’s events. Its broader history gives the creators room to explore Derry’s past without making the entity fully comprehensible.

That balance is intentional. Muschietti told Esquire, “One of the great things about the book is no one ever gets to know the truth about It—and that’s where our curiosity goes.” In the same interview, he said the character would not become completely understood. The show’s origin reveal therefore answers how It arrived in this version of the story while leaving its ultimate nature—and its reason for staying—open.

How much of this mythology comes from King?

The prequel is based on King’s It, but its specific Galloo and falling-star account belongs to the adaptation’s expanded mythology. The Television Academy reports that King was not directly involved in writing or production, although he read scripts and watched episodes. Readers comparing the book with the show should expect the novel’s fragmentary Derry history and the series’ new explanations to overlap without being identical.
