The series portrays that last use as a painful breach of a personal rule, not effortless or casual mind-reading. It expands a character whose role in Stephen King’s It is brief into a major figure in Derry’s military-era story.
What Hallorann can do with the Shine in Welcome to Derry
The Shine is a psychic ability. The series shows Hallorann using it in several ways, but those scenes do not establish a complete list of powers or show that he can control the gift in every situation.
Recognize and connect with another Shiner
In The Shining, Hallorann recognizes Danny Torrance’s gift because he has the Shine himself. Their shared ability creates a psychic connection; it is not evidence that Hallorann has identical experiences or abilities to Danny. TV Insider’s background on the character describes this link.
Sense danger and seek It
In the novel’s Black Spot episode, Hallorann warns that the main exit is blocked and directs people to escape through a window. The account implies that his Shine informs his recognition of danger. In the series, he also uses the gift to seek It, which becomes aware of him. That scene demonstrates a particular kind of psychic perception; it does not prove that he can detect It—or other threats—whenever he chooses. TheWrap’s interview with Chris Chalk discusses the show’s depiction of Hallorann confronting It.

Enter another person’s mind
In episode 4, Hallorann forces his way into Taniel’s mind during an interrogation to get information. Actor Chris Chalk describes the experience as painful for both the person targeted and the person using the Shine: “Using The Shining is a painful experience for the person it’s focused on but also the one wielding it.” The scene frames the act as a serious intrusion, not routine access to anyone’s thoughts.
Use it deceptively
Series executive producer and director Andy Muschietti told the Television Academy that Hallorann’s backstory includes using the Shine to cheat at poker. After he is caught in the military, General Shaw bails him out for a mission in Derry. This is the creators’ account of the show’s backstory, not an ability established by King’s novel. Why Hallorann is in the story
Welcome to Derry begins in 1962 and serves as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 It films. It draws on Derry’s history in King’s novel, but the series gives Hallorann a much larger part in the events surrounding the town. The creators have described the book’s history as inspiration for expanding the story. The Television Academy interview covers that adaptation approach.
In King’s It, Hallorann is briefly connected to the Black Spot nightclub. The series, with Chris Chalk playing a younger Hallorann, turns that connection into part of a military mission involving Derry. The show’s expanded backstory should not be treated as though it all appears in the novel or in every screen version of the character.

What the series does—and does not—establish
- Shown or described: psychic recognition and connection, a warning associated with danger, seeking It, and invasive access to Taniel’s mind.
- Not established: an exhaustive catalogue of Hallorann’s powers, reliable control in all circumstances, or a definitive ranking of his strength against Danny’s.
- Important distinction: the show presents mental intrusion as painful and against Hallorann’s own rule. Chalk paraphrased that rule this way: “If his grandmother’s Cardinal Rule is ‘never open the box,’ Part Two is ‘don’t be going in people’s heads and messing around.’”
For readers interested in comparing adaptation choices, King’s It is the source text for the series and includes Hallorann’s Black Spot connection. The show adds a military-era storyline rather than simply reproducing that brief role.
