Welcome Home is an effective, tightly confined thriller whose performances and atmosphere build real unease—but its abuse-centered story and graphic violence make it a difficult watch for some viewers.
What is Welcome Home about?
Directed by Pushkar Mahabal and written by Ankita Narang, the 2020 Hindi horror-crime thriller follows Anuja (Kashmira Irani) and Neha (Swarda Thigale), two teachers carrying out census-related work. Their visit to a remote household takes a troubling turn when they meet Prerna (Tina Bhatia), a heavily pregnant woman whose bruises and behavior raise Anuja’s concern. Anuja returns with Neha, and the women find themselves trying to escape a household governed by abuse and control. That setup is best approached without knowing the later turns.
Does the film’s tension work?
The isolated house gives the story a naturally constricted feel, and the handheld cinematography adds to the sense of instability. In her Scroll.in review, Nandini Ramnath praised the claustrophobic atmosphere and the performances, particularly those of the female leads and Boloram Das. She described the film’s themes through imprisonment and resistance, rather than treating the suspense as an end in itself.
That emphasis on performance helps the film’s confined setting carry emotional weight. The central tension comes not only from what might happen next, but from the characters’ limited room to act within a household shaped by coercion. The result is grim and unsettling, with an atmosphere that serves the story’s themes.

How graphic and upsetting is Welcome Home?
This is not a gentle mystery or a light supernatural scare. Abuse and control sit at the center of the plot, and the film includes graphic violence. Times of India critic Pallabi Dey Purkayastha gave it 3.5/5 in 2020, praising the lead performances and Mahabal’s direction while warning that “the gore is too much to process at times.” Her review specifically flags two particularly graphic scenes. That is one critic’s assessment, but it is a useful warning if you are sensitive to violence or abuse-related material.

- Kashmira Irani plays Anuja.
- Swarda Thigale plays Neha.
- Tina Bhatia plays Prerna.
- Boloram Das appears in a supporting role singled out for its unsettling effect by Scroll.in critic Nandini Ramnath.
