Ricci also appears in the series, but as Marilyn Thornhill, whose identity is revealed as Laurel Gates—not as Wednesday. The comparison below separates the 1991 film’s credited cast from the series ensemble and shows how the two stories use the Addams family differently.
Wednesday and The Addams Family cast, side by side
The film column below is limited to The Addams Family (1991). Netflix’s catalog lists the film’s cast but does not assign roles to each performer in that entry; the role mappings shown here are the familiar principal credits, while the series roles are identified in Netflix’s cast guide.
| Character or connection | Netflix series Wednesday | The Addams Family (1991) |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday Addams | Jenna Ortega | Christina Ricci |
| Morticia Addams | Catherine Zeta-Jones | Anjelica Huston |
| Gomez Addams | Luis Guzmán | Raul Julia |
| Uncle Fester | Fred Armisen | Christopher Lloyd |
| Christina Ricci’s role | Marilyn Thornhill, later revealed as Laurel Gates | Wednesday Addams |
Netflix’s 1991 title page also names Dan Hedaya, Elizabeth Wilson, Judith Malina, Carel Struycken, Jimmy Workman and Christopher Hart among the film’s cast. The catalog entry does not map those names to roles, so they are listed as cast rather than assigned characters here. Netflix’s catalog entry for The Addams Family identifies the title as a 1991 film and gives its synopsis and cast.
Christina Ricci connects the versions—but changes roles
Ricci’s connection is the clearest link between the 1990s films and the series: she was the young Wednesday in the 1991 movie and returned to the Addams world in Wednesday as Nevermore teacher Marilyn Thornhill, whose true identity is Laurel Gates. Ortega is the series’ Wednesday. Ricci does not reprise the character in the show.

Christopher Lloyd is another returning franchise connection. He played Uncle Fester in the 1990s films and appears in Wednesday as Fester. In the film, Raul Julia plays Gomez; the series casts Luis Guzmán in that role. These are different performers in separate versions, not a shared continuing storyline.
How the stories differ
Wednesday: a student’s story at Nevermore
The Netflix series follows a teenage Wednesday as a newcomer at Nevermore Academy, where she develops psychic abilities and becomes involved in a series of monstrous killings. The school setting gives the story room for classmates and other supernatural characters alongside the Addams family. Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s roommate, provides a strong personality contrast: she is notably more sociable and colorful than Wednesday.

The Addams Family (1991): a family-centered feature
The 1991 film centers on the family welcoming long-lost Uncle Fester back into their home. Its focus is the Addams household and Fester’s return, rather than Wednesday navigating a school community. That difference in premise and format matters as much as the recasting: the film is a feature about the family, while the series develops Wednesday’s life at Nevermore.
