In IGN’s review, Tom Jorgensen rates Zach Cregger’s 2025 horror film 9/10 and gives it an Editors’ Choice label. That is one critic’s assessment, but his case is clear: Weapons develops the qualities that made Barbarian memorable rather than simply repeating its formula.
What is Weapons about?
Warner Bros. describes a town shaken when all but one child from the same class mysteriously disappear on the same night at exactly the same time. The community is left asking who—or what—is responsible. The premise sets up a horror mystery, not a straightforward creature feature or a story with one obvious point of view.
The film moves through time-hopping chapters focused on people affected by the disappearances. That structure gradually changes how the events look, while keeping the central mystery in view. It is best to go in knowing only the setup: later turns are part of the experience.
Does it deliver the qualities of Barbarian?
According to Jorgensen’s IGN review, yes—but as a refinement, not a duplicate. He sees Cregger returning to a blend of horror and dark comedy, with tension that can shift into humor without draining the unease. The chapter structure gives that tonal mix room to develop across different characters and perspectives.

| What you may be looking for | How Weapons compares, according to Jorgensen’s review |
|---|---|
| Tension and scares | The film builds tension across its chapters, with the mystery helping sustain unease. |
| Dark-comic tone | It carries forward the horror-and-humor balance associated with Barbarian, while aiming for more control over that blend. |
| Structure and mystery | Its time-hopping chapters widen the story and invite viewers to reassess what they know. |
| Performances | Jorgensen highlights Julia Garner, Josh Brolin and Alden Ehrenreich as key anchors, and also praises Austin Abrams. |
These are a critic’s comparisons, not a promise that the films feel identical. If what you enjoyed about Barbarian was its unpredictability and tonal shifts, Jorgensen’s review suggests Weapons is a strong follow-up. If you want a conventional, single-track horror story, its changing perspectives may be less appealing.
What does the review say about the cast and ending?
The official cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. Jorgensen particularly praises Garner, Brolin, Ehrenreich and Abrams, describing the performances as part of what gives the shifting story its footing.

Jorgensen finds the finale satisfying even if a viewer anticipates where the story is heading. That judgment matters if you prize a surprise above all else: the film’s payoff is not dependent solely on catching you off guard.
How long is Weapons, and where can you watch it?
The British Board of Film Classification lists the runtime as 2 hours 8 minutes (128 minutes). Warner Bros. gives the U.S. nationwide theatrical release date as August 8, 2025; Dolby lists August 7, reflecting a territory-specific date rather than a contradiction about the film itself.

Amazon’s film page offers a route to check Prime Video to rent or buy Weapons. That listing establishes a digital rental or purchase option, not inclusion with a Prime subscription; check the current terms and availability where you are. Warner Bros. Discovery announced an HBO Max streaming debut for October 24, 2025, followed by an HBO linear debut on October 25, 2025, but those dates do not establish whether the film is in either service’s current catalog.

If you liked Barbarian for its combination of suspense, dark humor and story turns, Jorgensen’s 9/10 IGN review offers a strong reason to try Weapons. He calls it “a righteous, fully actualized genre-bender” and describes it as a scary-yet-funny film that sustains its momentum. Treat that score as one reviewer’s verdict: the most useful expectation is a chapter-based horror mystery whose shifting viewpoints and tonal control are central to the experience.
