Weapons is Zach Cregger’s next feature after Barbarian, not a direct sequel to it. Cregger said the films have no Easter eggs connecting them and that he did not set out to build a shared universe. A different connection is now in development: a prequel about Weapons character Aunt Gladys, whose script was reported in progress in July 2026.
Is Weapons a sequel to Barbarian?
No. New Line described Weapons as Cregger’s follow-up to his 2022 film Barbarian, but “follow-up” refers to his filmmaking career, not a continuation of that movie’s story. In an August 7, 2025 interview with Us Weekly, Cregger responded to the sequel characterization: “That’s not entirely accurate.” He also said, “There’s no Easter eggs in this film.”

The films are both horror features directed by Cregger, but the available statements do not establish a shared narrative or characters. Cregger said he did not “fancy” having his own cinematic universe, while leaving open more stories about Weapons characters.
What is Weapons about?
The film is a horror thriller about a classroom in which all but one child mysteriously vanish on the same night at 2:17 a.m. Cregger wrote and directed the New Line film, distributed by Warner Bros. Its cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan, according to WaterTower Music.

The U.S. theatrical release was August 8, 2025; international release began August 6. WaterTower Music also announced the original motion picture soundtrack on vinyl and CD, with physical preorders through Waxwork Records.
Is Aunt Gladys getting a prequel?
Yes, a Gladys prequel is in development. TheWrap reported on July 23, 2026 that Cregger said its script was “in progress now” and “being written.” The story is intended to explore Gladys’s origins while preserving the twists and mysteries in Weapons. TheWrap reported Cregger and Zach Shields as writers, with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon producing for Vertigo Entertainment.

TheWrap had previously reported a September 8, 2028 theatrical release date for the film in an April 14, 2026 schedule report. That is an announced plan, not a guaranteed date; theatrical schedules can change. The report also cited Weapons’ worldwide box office at $267 million, but the sequel question does not depend on that figure.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the film would debut on HBO Max in the United States on October 24, 2025, followed by HBO linear on October 25. That announcement records the original release timing; it does not establish whether the film remains available on HBO Max in October 2026. Check the service’s current catalog for availability.
