Spoilers for the full film. In Zach Cregger’s Weapons, Aunt Gladys is responsible for the disappearance of 17 children from Justine Gandy’s class. She uses supernatural control to hold them in the basement of Alex’s home, and Alex ultimately turns her own magic against her. The children kill Gladys, but the rescue does not undo the damage: they remain changed, Alex’s parents do not recover, and Alex goes to live with another aunt.
Why did the children disappear?
The mystery begins at 2:17 a.m., when 17 children from Mrs. Gandy’s class leave their homes and vanish. Alex Lilly is the only student who stays behind. The film revisits the same events through several Maybrook residents’ chapters, gradually showing how their experiences fit together.
Gladys, who presents herself as Alex’s aunt, is behind the disappearances. She is a witch who uses a branch and personal tokens, including hair or clothing, to control people. Her victims can be made to attack others or left in a stupor while she apparently draws on their life force. The missing children are held in the basement of Alex’s home, and Alex’s parents are under Gladys’s influence.
How does Alex turn the spell against Gladys?
As Justine and Archer close in, Gladys uses controlled adults as weapons. Alex finds a way to use her method against her and sends his classmates after her. They pursue Gladys through town and tear her apart, ending her immediate threat.

What happens to the children and Alex’s family?
The closing narration says the children return home, but they remain affected by what happened. Alex’s parents never recover, and Alex goes to live with a different aunt. Gladys’s death ends the supernatural control at the center of the plot; it does not restore the household or erase what the children have endured.
What does the title Weapons mean?
A reading grounded in the plot is that people become weapons when someone else controls them. Gladys turns adults and children into instruments of violence, including the children who ultimately kill her. That is a supported interpretation, not a definitive decoding of the title.

Cregger has cautioned against reducing the film to a specific social allegory. He said he was not trying to comment on collective societal tragedies, and has welcomed the possibility of multiple readings. The film’s meaning can include its title’s image of manipulation without being limited to one prescribed explanation.
How is Alex’s story autobiographical?
Cregger has said Alex’s final chapter draws directly on his childhood experience of living with an alcoholic parent and becoming a caregiver. He told Vanity Fair, “The last chapter of this movie is straight-up autobiographical. That was my childhood.” He compared addiction’s effects on family behavior to Gladys’s spell, while clarifying that he was not trying to preach a sermon about children of addicts.

What does the film leave unexplained?
The ending does not give a complete account of Gladys’s origins, age, or why she needs the children. Her powers are clear enough for Alex to turn them against her, but the film withholds a full mythology. Cregger has described keeping Gladys mysterious as part of the film’s design.
The final narration also changes how much closure the ending offers. Cregger said an earlier version ended on Matthew’s vacant expression, without narration explaining the aftermath. After test-screening audiences reacted badly to that version, narration was added. The released cut tells viewers where the children and Alex end up, while leaving the emotional consequences unresolved.
