“Choice,” the seventh episode of The Acolyte, returns to the Brendok tragedy from the Jedi’s point of view. Its purpose is not simply to show the same events again: it asks viewers to reconsider what Sol, Torbin, Mae and the coven meant to do—and what their choices set in motion. That shift gives the tragedy more moral complexity, though the retelling’s explanatory pace can blunt the suspense.

“Choice” is season 1, episode 7 of The Acolyte, a TV-14 series set in the High Republic era. It was released on July 9, 2024. Apple TV lists the episode at 42 minutes; that listing is platform metadata and may not reflect every region’s presentation. Disney+ describes the episode in four words: “A bitter truth is revealed.”
The episode returns to Brendok, where the Jedi are investigating a vergence in the Force. The official StarWars.com episode guide describes the discovery of the twins and their coven as the start of events that change the lives of those on Brendok. The series itself is set a hundred years before the rise of the Empire.

Spoilers: What happens in “Choice”?
“Choice” retells the night at Brendok through the Jedi’s perspective, expanding on the events previously shown in “Destiny.” Sol grows concerned about the twins, while Torbin’s desire to return home helps drive the Jedi back to the fortress. A fire and a battle follow. Mother Aniseya and most of the witches die, and the Jedi leave carrying a secret.
The episode’s official guide calls the discovery about the twins’ bloodline a “shocking” one. The important point for the retelling is not merely the new information: the episode presents a second account of the night, changing how the characters’ intentions and responsibility can be read. Details are best understood as the episode’s depicted account, rather than as an uncomplicated final explanation of every disputed moment.

How does “Choice” change what “Destiny” showed?
The core contrast is point of view. “Destiny” centers the twins and their mothers; “Choice” shifts attention to the Jedi. The same tragedy therefore looks less like a single chain of actions with an obvious meaning and more like a collision between fear, urgency and incompatible judgments.

That distinction between motive and consequence is the episode’s strongest dramatic idea. Sol can be protective and still be implicated in a catastrophe. Torbin can be driven by impatience without being the sole cause of what follows. The coven, meanwhile, is no longer only viewed through the aftermath of its destruction: the Jedi’s perspective makes the encounter itself central to how the disaster is understood.

Does the repeated story build suspense or slow the episode?
Because “Destiny” has already shown the outcome, “Choice” cannot rely on the basic question of what happens to the coven. Its suspense comes instead from what the Jedi know, what they misunderstand and how the additional context changes the meaning of familiar events. That is a sound reason to revisit the night, but it places extra weight on the new characterization and revelations.
The structure is most effective when a new perspective changes accountability. It is less compelling when a scene mainly restates a plot mechanism the audience has already seen. As a result, the episode can feel both clarifying and repetitive: viewers gain a more complicated picture of the participants, but foreknowledge limits the shock of the tragedy itself.

Action, craft and emotional payoff
The episode’s physical conflict gives the Brendok flashback momentum. In a July 10, 2024 review, Melody McCune of Sideshow praised its “fantastic fight choreography and Lightsaber work.” That is McCune’s assessment, not a measure of consensus, but it points to the action as a notable strength of the installment.
The more lasting payoff is emotional rather than mechanical. The second perspective makes the tragedy easier to read as a series of consequential choices instead of a mystery whose answer alone will resolve the story. It also leaves an uncomfortable gap between what characters believe they are doing and the harm that follows. Whether that makes the episode satisfying depends on how much value a viewer places on moral reinterpretation over forward movement: the former gains depth, while the latter pauses for a return to familiar ground.

How critics received the episode
Available critical reactions were mixed. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 47% Tomatometer from 17 reviews in a snapshot accessed in 2026; the score can change as reviews are added or the page updates. Its critics consensus said the penultimate episode left “a lackluster residue” on the series’ central point. That is the aggregator’s consensus, not a quote from a single critic.
Individual responses differed. Forbes’ Erik Kain called “Choice” “probably its best so far” in a July 10, 2024 recap-review and emphasized how the episode changes the appearance of the Brendok events. The contrast captures the central divide in the episode’s design: a viewer may welcome the added perspective as a meaningful reinterpretation, or feel that returning to known events delays the season’s larger story.
Verdict
“Choice” is strongest as a character-focused revision of “Destiny,” not as a standalone burst of action or a final answer to every Brendok question. Its perspective makes Sol’s intervention and Torbin’s impatience more consequential, and it complicates how Mae’s part in the fire is understood. The trade-off is a deliberately repeated story whose outcome is already known. The retelling earns its place when it changes the moral weight of the tragedy; it is less persuasive when explanation stands in for momentum.
The Acolyte is listed on Disney+, though streaming availability varies by region.
