Seventeen children from one third-grade class leave home at 2:17 a.m. and gather at Alex’s house. Alex is the only classmate who stays behind. Gladys, a relative living with Alex’s family, has used personal objects and magic to summon and control the children in the basement, drawing on their vitality. Alex ultimately turns her method against her; the children chase Gladys down and kill her. They return to their families, but the final narration makes clear that rescue does not erase the trauma.
What happened to the missing children?
The children did not organize a secret escape or respond to an ordinary signal. Gladys first has Alex gather a personal trace from each classmate: the ending account identifies these as the children’s hand-drawn name tags. She incorporates those objects into a ritual that brings all 17 children to Alex’s home at exactly 2:17 a.m.
Once there, the children are held in the basement. They stand almost motionless while Gladys appears to draw energy from them. Alex is left outside that group so the household can look normal and so he can help maintain the arrangement, including feeding the children soup. His apparent exemption is therefore part of Gladys’s disguise, not evidence that he was overlooked.
Why was Alex the only child who stayed?
Alex is useful to Gladys because he can function in the ordinary world. Keeping one pupil apparently safe helps conceal where the others are and gives Gladys a child who can preserve the household routine. The film’s central reveal links the lone surviving classmate to the basement where the missing children are being held.

Why did 17 kids run away at 2:17 a.m.?
The film’s revealed cause is Gladys’s spell. The synchronized departure is a supernatural compulsion tied to the children’s personal items, not a coordinated decision made by the children themselves. The number 17 is the film’s premise: every child in the class disappears except Alex.
How does the ending work?

Gladys’s control uses a group of ritual materials described in accounts of the finale: sticks or branches, blood, hair, water and a bell. Alex learns enough about the process to reproduce and reverse it. The film does not present this as a conventional fight in which he simply overpowers Gladys; he redirects the same kind of control she has been using.
The children turn on Gladys
When Justine and Archer reach the house, Gladys has also made adults attack. Alex redirects the children toward her instead. They pursue Gladys through the neighborhood and tear her apart. Her death breaks the active control over the children, allowing them to leave and return home.

What happens after Gladys dies?
Gladys’s death ends the immediate threat, but it is not a reset button. Archer is reunited with his son, and the children are brought back to their families. The final narration says some begin speaking again, while implying that recovery remains incomplete. The ending is a rescue followed by a long, uncertain aftermath.

Gladys is the person responsible for the disappearances, but the film deliberately withholds a definitive account of what she is. Writer-director Zach Cregger said, “I don’t know the answer, but I love that I don’t know the answer.” He asked Madigan to choose between two possible histories: Gladys could be a person using magic to survive a life-threatening illness, or a nonhuman entity imitating a person. Neither possibility is confirmed as canon.
That uncertainty is different from uncertainty about the children’s fate. The plot establishes Gladys as the cause of the abduction and control; it leaves her origin and nature unresolved.

Do the children recover?
They survive and are returned to their families, but the film does not promise full psychological recovery. The closing narration reports that some children begin speaking again, which indicates improvement, while its tone stresses continuing damage. Their silence, behavior and reintegration should be understood as consequences of what happened in the basement rather than symptoms that vanish when the spell ends.

Cregger’s autobiographical connection
Cregger connected Alex’s caregiver role to his own childhood experience with an alcoholic parent. He described the final chapter as “straight-up autobiographical,” referring to the emotional reversal in which a child manages a household when a parent’s addiction makes home unpredictable. That statement identifies a thematic and emotional source, not a claim that the supernatural events literally happened to him.

The household as a metaphor for addiction
Viewed through Cregger’s explanation, Gladys’s control of the home represents the way addiction can dominate family life while a child compensates, conceals problems and performs adult responsibilities. The magic supplies the horror-film mechanism; the caregiver dynamic supplies the personal truth behind Alex’s chapter.

A school-shooting allegory?
TheWrap has offered a separate interpretation that treats the disappearance and its aftermath as an allegory for school shootings and the prolonged trauma left in a community. That is a critical reading, not an explanation Cregger has confirmed as the film’s single meaning. It can sit alongside the addiction reading without replacing the literal plot mechanics.

No. Weapons is told through interwoven character chapters rather than one uninterrupted chronology. Cregger has said he tried mapping the events on a calendar and found significant gaps. He has also described the accounts as subjective and the narrators as unreliable: “They’re unreliable narrators. It’s all, yes, subjective.”
The safest timeline is therefore the causal sequence the film clearly establishes:
