The series is We Own This City, a Baltimore-set miniseries about police corruption and the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force. It shares a creative connection and setting with The Wire, but it is a separate story—not a sequel. Its HBO Max premiere was April 25, 2022, so it is no longer a new release. BGR reported the premiere and series details.
What is We Own This City about?
The miniseries follows the rise and fall of Baltimore’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption surrounding the police unit. The story is based on a book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton. BGR identifies David Simon and George Pelecanos as co-creators and Jon Bernthal as Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, alongside cast members Josh Charles, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jamie Hector.

BGR attributes this logline to HBO Max: “We Own This City chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work.”
How is it connected to The Wire?
The connection is David Simon and Baltimore, not a shared plot. HBO credits Simon as the creator of The Wire and describes it as a crime drama that examines the city through civilian and law-enforcement perspectives. We Own This City is instead focused on the Gun Trace Task Force and its corruption. HBO’s official The Wire page provides the series description.
