At the reported world premiere of 14th, Ava DuVernay warned that democratic erosion can happen gradually, while people continue living ordinary lives. “We need to fight,” she told the audience, describing the documentary as a call to leave the screening ready to act.
What DuVernay said at the premiere
DuVernay introduced 14th at the reported closing-night screening of the 2026 New York Film Festival on Oct. 9 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. “The erosion of democracy doesn’t announce itself,” she said. “It happens one day at a time and one exception at a time.” She warned that people might continue with ordinary life even as democracy is being lost, then concluded: “We need to fight, and I hope you come out of this film wanting to fight hard.”
In a separate interview reported around the premiere, DuVernay said she was “not really interested in instilling hope.” Her stated aim was to make viewers feel “ignited” and to stir “the fight in people.”
What ‘14th’ is about
The Hollywood Reporter, whose account was republished by CitrixNews, describes 14th as a Netflix documentary directed by DuVernay about the Fourteenth Amendment and its contested history. The film reportedly connects the post-Civil War Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments with disputes from Reconstruction through present-day controversies, including birthright citizenship.

DuVernay said she finished the film two weeks before the premiere to keep it timely. The screening and remarks are reported by The Hollywood Reporter via CitrixNews; the original report was not available for direct review, so event details, quotations and release dates here are attributed to that reporting.
What participants said—and what those remarks mean
The report also quotes documentary participants Stacey Abrams and Sherrilyn Ifill. Abrams described the United States as “in the midst of a competitive authoritarian state” and connected civic response to the midterm elections. That is Abrams’s political characterization, not a court ruling or an institutional classification established by the report.
Ifill, identified in the report as the former head of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, said she believed “everything is at stake.” She also described the Fourteenth Amendment as a basis for the country to be “refounded” and “stitched back together.” These are the participants’ views about the stakes and possibilities of the amendment.
What the Supreme Court ruled on birthright citizenship
The reported focus on birthright citizenship has a specific legal context. In Trump v. Barbara, decided June 30, 2026, the Supreme Court held that children born in the United States to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present are citizens at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. The Court’s syllabus states that those children are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States. This is the Court’s holding; it should not be conflated with the documentary’s broader historical framing or with a participant’s political description.
