In an Saturday Night Live sketch about workplace technology, receptionists asked to make a PowerPoint presentation struggle with software they barely know. The joke lands on the gap between an everyday office assignment and the characters’ discomfort with computers.
What happens in the SNL PowerPoint sketch?
Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant play receptionists preparing a presentation, while Mikey Day and Idris Elba play Microsoft employees helping office workers brush up on PowerPoint, according to GeekWire’s March 11, 2019 report.
Bryant’s character explains the problem: “We don’t even use computers, just the phone, so we will see.” As the presentation proves difficult, the character’s uncertainty turns into resignation: “This is not my world! … Honestly I’m at the point in my life where I feel that I can’t learn.” These are lines attributed to the character, not Bryant speaking about herself.
Why the workplace premise works
The sketch gets its comedy from a mismatch: the receptionists are assigned a familiar office task, but the desktop software feels foreign to them. Their uncertainty escalates as they try to get through the presentation, turning a routine skills refresher into a small crisis of confidence.
#1 Best Overall
- Presenter mode, built-in Class 2 red laser pointer for presentations, intuitive touch-keys for easy slideshow control. AAA batteries required (best with Polaroid AAA batteries)
- Bright red laser light - Easy to see against most backgrounds, works as a pointer clicker for presentation and clicker for powerpoint presentations
- Up to 50-foot wireless range for freedom to move around the room
- There's no software to install. Just plug the receiver into a USB port to begin. This power point clicker wireless solution makes presentations easy, and you can store the receiver in the presentation remote after use.
- 2.4GHz RF wireless technology, built-in docking bay stores receiver for easy pack up and portability; works well as a presenter clicker wireless or computer clicker for presentations.
That setup makes the technology the pressure point rather than the subject of a product review. PowerPoint is the recognizable tool around which the characters’ discomfort—and the sketch’s humor—takes shape.
Who is in it, and when did it air?
GeekWire identifies McKinnon and Bryant as the receptionists and Day and Elba as the Microsoft employees. Its article says the sketch appeared “this weekend” relative to its March 11, 2019 publication, but does not give an episode number or exact original broadcast date. The article links to a video titled “PowerPoint – SNL.”
