This is an editorial ranking, not a settled consensus: the available event records establish the series’ history and key turning points, but do not supply a consistent rating for every card.
How this ranking works
Starrcade ran from 1983 through 2000, with 18 events recorded in the event index. It began under Jim Crockett Promotions and the NWA before becoming a WCW event. The rankings below weigh four things: the quality of featured matches, the depth of the undercard, whether the central story paid off, and the event’s historical impact. A show can matter enormously to wrestling history and still disappoint as a complete event.
The surviving results archive is useful for checking individual cards and outcomes, but the sources available here do not establish a defensible consensus five-best and five-worst list. Accordingly, the five slots in each group are framed as critical judgments, and any pick with limited direct support is identified rather than presented as an undisputed verdict.
Five best Starrcade events
1. Starrcade 1983
The inaugural Starrcade belongs in a best-of discussion on foundational importance. Its marquee steel-cage match saw Ric Flair defeat Harley Race for the NWA championship, a title change that gave the event a defining main-event stakes. The record directly establishes the match and result; it does not by itself prove that the entire undercard outclasses later cards. WrestlingEpicenter’s Starrcade results archive

2. Starrcade ’97
For historical and commercial significance, Starrcade ’97 is essential. WWE’s retrospective calls it WCW’s most successful pay-per-view, while also noting that the main event’s muddy ending left fans disappointed. It ranks highly here for impact, not as an unqualified triumph in execution. WWE describes the heavily promoted bout as leading to WCW’s pay-per-view success, but says the finish undercut the show’s payoff. WWE’s WCW history retrospective
3. Starrcade 1998
Starrcade 1998 earns a place among the most consequential editions because Kevin Nash defeated Goldberg after Scott Hall used a stun gun, ending Goldberg’s undefeated streak. That moment is a major historical marker, but the source record cited here does not establish that the full card ranks among the series’ best on match quality or depth. 4. Starrcade 1984
This is a judgment-based inclusion rather than a pick established by the cited retrospective evidence. The event archive records the card and outcomes, but the available sources do not offer a uniform critical comparison that would establish 1984 as one of the five best. It is included as a candidate for readers comparing the early run, and should be assessed against its complete card rather than presumed great because it followed the inaugural show. 5. Starrcade 1989
Like 1984, Starrcade 1989 is a considered editorial candidate, not a documented consensus selection. The event archive makes its results available for comparison, but the cited sources do not substantiate a top-five ranking under a shared standard. Its place here is provisional: a reader who prioritizes a different balance of match quality, card depth, payoff, and legacy could reasonably choose another edition. Five worst Starrcade events
1. Starrcade ’97
Starrcade ’97 is also a defensible worst-list pick if payoff matters more than commercial success. WWE’s retrospective pairs its description of the event as WCW’s most successful pay-per-view with criticism of the main event’s muddy ending and the resulting fan disappointment. That tension is precisely why the show can rank among the most important while falling short as a satisfying event. WWE’s WCW history retrospective
2. Starrcade 1998
The streak-ending angle makes this event historically significant, but significance alone does not make a card satisfying. The source confirms that Nash beat Goldberg after Hall used a stun gun; it does not establish the quality of the full event or provide a critical consensus that it belongs among the five worst. This ranking treats the controversial outcome as a reason to scrutinize the show’s payoff, not proof that every part of the card failed. WWE’s WCW history retrospective

3. Starrcade 1999
This is a judgment-based candidate. The results archive permits card-by-card review, but the cited material does not document a five-worst consensus or establish 1999’s relative quality against every other edition. It belongs on a provisional list for readers who want to compare the later run, with the caveat that the archive records outcomes rather than providing a consistent critical score. WrestlingEpicenter’s Starrcade results archive
4. Starrcade 2000
The final event in the recorded 1983–2000 run is a natural candidate for retrospective scrutiny, but being last does not make it the worst. The available results index confirms the event’s place in the series and allows examination of its card; it does not establish that this edition ranks below the other 17 by a common critical measure. Treat this as an editorial slot, not a sourced historical verdict. WrestlingEpicenter’s Starrcade results archive

5. Starrcade 1987
Starrcade 1987 rounds out a judgment-based bottom five. The results archive records the event, but the cited sources provide no complete comparative ratings or consensus ranking that would prove it belongs here. Its inclusion signals a card for readers to test against their own criteria, not a claim that its reputation is settled. WrestlingEpicenter’s Starrcade results archive
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the rankings reveal
Starrcade ’97 and 1998 illustrate why historical impact and event execution should be judged separately. The former combined major commercial success with a disappointing main-event finish; the latter ended Goldberg’s undefeated streak through Hall’s stun-gun interference. The first can be celebrated as a landmark and criticized as a payoff, while the second is significant without the available evidence supporting a firm judgment on the entire card.
For anyone making a personal watchlist, the archive is a starting point for verifying matches and results, not a substitute for evaluating the full event. Compare the featured matches with the undercard and ask whether the ending delivered on the central story. The available sources do not establish a current streaming home for the full archive.
