The Cecil Hotel surveillance footage shows Elisa Lam in and just outside an elevator shortly after midnight on February 1, 2013. The file listed by Wikimedia Commons runs 2 minutes 30 seconds. It records movement in one place; it does not explain what happened afterward or establish Lam’s state of mind.
Watch the elevator video
The video is available on Wikimedia Commons, which lists its duration as 2 minutes 30 seconds and associates it with February 1, 2013. The hotel provided surveillance footage to the Los Angeles Police Department, according to a contemporaneous CityNews Vancouver report.
What the footage can—and cannot—show
The recording shows Lam entering and moving around the elevator area. Those visible actions can be described, but they do not establish why she acted as she did, what she was thinking, or what happened beyond the camera’s view.
LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman cautioned against drawing conclusions about her mental state from the clip: “Obviously from watching the video you can see that she does some actions that kind of make you wonder what her actions are. But we can’t comment on what state of mind she was in or so-forth,” she told CityNews in February 2013.

What was reported after the video
On February 19, 2013, the Los Angeles Times reported that a hotel maintenance worker found Lam’s body in a rooftop water tank after residents complained about low water pressure. The precise sequence between the elevator recording and the discovery is not established by the sources cited here.
In June 2013, the Los Angeles County coroner’s conclusion was reported as accidental drowning. The Los Angeles Times said bipolar disorder was a significant condition and that toxicology tests found nothing that contributed to her death. These findings do not turn the elevator video into an explanation of how events unfolded.

Why the clip drew attention
The video became a focus of intense online discussion. The Los Angeles Times reported that it received more than 3 million views and 40,000 comments on Youku over a 10-day span in 2013. Those figures describe that platform and period, not a current or independently audited total.
The case and the stories built around it were later explored in the four-part Netflix docuseries Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. A 2021 Los Angeles Times account discusses the series and the mythology surrounding the case. The docuseries is a separate interpretation, not a replacement for the coroner’s finding.
