Karla Sofía Gascón spoke on stage at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2025, after Emilia Pérez won Best Picture – Musical/Comedy. Her remarks offered a message of resilience and solidarity with trans people, and the line most often repeated from them is “The light always wins over darkness.” Reports of the speech quote different parts of it, so the exact wording depends on which account you read.
How the moment happened
The film’s cast and creative team accepted the award together. Director Jacques Audiard called Gascón forward to speak. According to the Associated Press’s report dated January 5, 2025, the Best Picture – Musical/Comedy prize was the final trophy of the evening, so her remarks closed the show’s award presentations. The Golden Globes’ official video page for the award confirms the film’s win and the ceremony date, and it is the most direct way to watch the moment yourself.
What Gascón said: the reported excerpts
No complete, authoritative transcript of the speech was available in the sources reviewed. What exists are excerpts printed by individual outlets, and they come in two languages. The table below separates them so you can see exactly what each one covers.
| Source (date) | Language of excerpt | Reported words | What the report adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associated Press (January 5, 2025) | English, as reported by AP | “I chose this color tonight, the Buddhist color, because I have a message for you. The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul.” | Ties the message to her orange gown, which the report describes as the color she chose. |
| Le Monde video report (January 6, 2025) | French, quoted in the original | «Vous pouvez nous mettre en prison, nous tabasser, mais vous ne pourrez jamais nous enlever notre âme, notre résistance et notre identité.» | Frames the speech as a message of support for trans people. The English rendering in the sentence of the report is a translation, not a direct quotation. |
Two points follow from the table. First, the AP and Le Monde excerpts overlap in theme but are not the same passage, so they should not be merged into one continuous speech. Second, the English rendering of the French line is a translation. Only the French wording appears in Le Monde’s quoted excerpt, and only the English wording appears in AP’s quoted excerpt.

How to verify exact wording yourself
- Open the official Golden Globes video page for the Best Picture – Musical/Comedy award and locate the segment where Audiard calls Gascón forward.
- Listen to the full acceptance remarks rather than a clip. The “light always wins over darkness” line is one sentence within a longer speech.
- Compare what you hear against the AP English excerpt and the Le Monde French excerpt. Treat any sentence not in either report as your own transcription, not as a published quotation.
- If you need to quote the speech in print, attribute the wording to the outlet that published it and to its date.
The reviewed sources did not establish whether the ceremony video is available in every territory or on every platform, so confirm access on the official Golden Globes site before you search for it elsewhere.
The film behind the award
Emilia Pérez was written and directed by Jacques Audiard and stars Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez. Netflix’s Tudum page of January 6, 2025 describes its story as following a cartel boss who seeks help from a defense attorney to complete a gender transition and live as her true self. That is a description of the film, not of Gascón’s own life.

Sources differ on how the film’s awards are labeled, so the list below follows Le Monde’s January 6, 2025 report of ten nominations and four wins. Netflix’s Tudum report of the same date also counts four Golden Globe wins.
| Award reported by Le Monde (January 6, 2025) | Label used in that report | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Best Picture – Musical/Comedy | “Best Comedy or Musical” | The award that prompted Gascón’s speech. Use the official label in your own writing. |
| Best Foreign Film | Best Foreign Film | Listed as won by the film. |
| Best Song | “El Mal” | Named for the song in the film. |
| Best Supporting Actress | Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña | An individual award for Saldaña, not for Gascón. |
Why the speech is tied to the film’s win, not an acting award
Gascón’s remarks were associated with the Best Picture – Musical/Comedy win. Reports of the evening do not connect the speech to an individual acting prize for her. Keeping the two apart matters when you cite the speech, because “she won at the Golden Globes” can be read as an acting award when the speech was given for the film’s top prize.
