David Letterman surprised Jimmy Fallon during The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s opening monologue on February 10, 2025. The moment brought Letterman back together with former bandleader Paul Shaffer and ended, according to a contemporaneous report, with Fallon and Letterman taking part in a tortilla challenge rather than telling cue-card jokes.
What happened during Letterman’s appearance?
Letterman joined Fallon’s opening monologue at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. He and Fallon traded on their shared late-night history: Letterman told him, “We used to do a show pretty much exactly like this,” as reported by TVLine on February 11, 2025.
The appearance also reunited Letterman with Paul Shaffer, his former bandleader. Shaffer was filling in as guest musical director while The Roots were rehearsing for Saturday Night Live’s anniversary weekend, according to TVLine’s report.
How did the segment end?
Andy Greene’s Yahoo Entertainment report, published February 11, 2025, says Letterman looked through Fallon’s cue cards but declined the offer to tell jokes. He then agreed to film a TikTok tortilla challenge with Fallon, in which the two repeatedly hit each other in the face with tortillas. That description is attributed to the report rather than presented as a firsthand viewing of the footage.
