Ars Technica’s 4-minute-37-second video Teach the Controversy: Flat Earthers, published November 7, 2018, asks why people still argue that Earth is flat. It pairs a short account of evidence for Earth’s shape with an explanation centered on distrust of experts, conspiratorial thinking, and the appeal of feeling distinctive. Those are the video’s interpretation of the social question, not a complete explanation of every person’s motives.
What the video covers
Senior science editor John Timmer’s explainer moves through several kinds of evidence: shadow observations, circumnavigation, observations of planets, gravity, views of the horizon from high altitude, and satellite systems. Its point is not that one photograph settles the question; it is that different observations and measurements support the same conclusion.

How do we know Earth is not flat?
Earth is round, though “sphere” is an approximation: rotation makes it slightly flattened at the poles, and its actual shape is irregular. NASA describes geodesy as the study of Earth’s shape, gravity, and rotation. It says GPS and other satellites allow scientists to measure Earth’s size and shape to within a centimeter. That precision is a measurement capability described on NASA’s educational page, not the accuracy of every GPS position shown to a user.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The case does not depend on trusting a single agency or accepting a single image. Shadow angles, navigation around the world, planetary observations, gravity, orbital motion, and measurements from space provide different ways to test how Earth is shaped. NASA’s 2025 expert interview also describes the history of shadow and star observations, seafaring, and space observation; it notes that the round Earth is used in space geodesy to determine location and direction.
- Shadows and stars: Observations from different places show angles that fit a curved Earth.
- Navigation and planetary observation: Circumnavigation and the behavior and appearance of other planets fit a round Earth.
- Gravity and satellites: Satellite motion follows gravity, and orbital measurements contribute to geodetic calculations.
- Views from orbit: NASA astronaut Ed Lu described the horizon from the International Space Station as “distinctly curved.” This is an observation from orbit, not a claim that the curvature must be obvious from every ground-level vantage point.
NASA’s overview explains Earth’s shape and geodetic measurement at What Is Earth? (Grades 5–8). Its explanations of satellite motion and orbital paths are in the Catalog of Earth Satellite Orbits. Lu’s account appears in Watching the World Go By, and NASA’s later history and explanation are in How Do We Know the Earth Isn’t Flat? We Asked a NASA Expert: Episode 53.

Why do people still argue about it?
The video shifts from physical evidence to the social appeal of conspiracy beliefs. It points to distrust of experts and institutions, conspiratorial thinking, and the sense of distinction that can come from holding a belief rejected by the mainstream. This is a framing offered by the video; it should not be mistaken for a measured account of how common flat-Earth belief is or a definitive explanation of any individual’s reasons. No prevalence estimate or quantitative study of causes is established here.
A historical name to correct
The video transcript appears to attribute a shadow-based estimate of Earth’s circumference to “Aristophanes.” That calculation is associated with Eratosthenes, not Aristophanes. NASA’s 2025 interview discusses the history of shadow observations. The distinction matters if you are using the video as a teaching resource: retain its broader point about comparing shadow angles, but use the correct historical attribution.

How to assess the competing claims
When a claim about Earth’s shape is presented, ask what kind of support it offers. Is it a direct observation, a repeatable measurement, or an explanatory model? Can observers working independently reproduce the result? Does the source show a measurement, or offer an interpretation of people’s beliefs?
A globe is useful for visualizing latitude, longitude, and geometry, but it is a model—not physical proof. The strongest case comes from independent observations and measurements that agree, including geodetic measurements and orbital observations.
