Wolf Man drew some enthusiastic first reactions, but those reactions did not translate into a breakout North American opening. The film opened third over the January 17, 2025 weekend, earning about $10.6 million, according to the Associated Press. Whether it was ultimately profitable is a separate question that the opening and reported production budget alone cannot answer.
Was Wolf Man a hit?
Not as a clear North American theatrical hit on opening weekend. The Associated Press reported that Wolf Man opened third in 3,354 theaters with about $10.6 million. The Numbers records the opening weekend at $10,897,495. Those figures describe the film’s launch, not its full theatrical run or final financial result. Associated Press; The Numbers
“Hit” can mean different things: a strong opening, favorable audience response, or a movie that earns more than its total costs. The opening-weekend rank and gross speak to the first measure. They do not establish lifetime profitability. The Numbers lists a $25 million production budget, but that is not a complete accounting of marketing, distribution, or studio receipts, so it cannot by itself prove either a profit or a loss.
What were the first reactions to Wolf Man?
The reactions were genuinely mixed rather than uniformly strong. A Rotten Tomatoes Editorial roundup collected praise for Leigh Whannell’s direction, Christopher Abbott’s lead performance, and the film’s intensity. Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon.net called it “the best Blumhouse movie in years.” The same roundup also included Edward Douglas of The Weekend Warrior describing it as “on par with The Invisible Man, though it might be far more divisive.” That contrast matters: a handful of glowing early comments can coexist with reservations about whether the film works as well as Whannell’s earlier horror hit. Early praise is not the same as broad consensus
Press and social reactions often appear before a film’s full review picture is clear. The roundup offers examples of individual critics’ responses, not proof that every viewer or critic agreed. During the opening weekend, AP reported a 53% Rotten Tomatoes score and a C− CinemaScore. Both are dated snapshots from January 2025; they should not be read as current audience scores or as a complete account of the film’s reception over time. Associated Press opening-weekend report
