No. In A Christmas Story, Ralphie receives a Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, not a decoder ring. He uses it to decipher a promotional message for Ovaltine—a letdown after all his anticipation.
What does Ralphie receive in A Christmas Story?
Ralphie gets a decoder pin from the Little Orphan Annie Secret Circle. The AFI Catalog describes it as a decoder pin, and the screenplay uses the same term: the narrator says, “I got no decoder pin.” AFI Catalog Published screenplay
Calling it a ring is understandable shorthand for a familiar kind of secret-code toy, but it is not the name of Ralphie’s object in the film. For the movie prop, “decoder pin” is the accurate description.
What does the decoder pin say?
After Ralphie sets the pin and decodes the number sequence broadcast on the radio, the message is “Be sure to drink your Ovaltine.” AFI identifies this as the film’s decoded message. The gag is that Ralphie expects a thrilling secret and instead gets an advertisement. AFI Catalog

Was the Ovaltine message real?
The Ovaltine message belongs to the film’s joke; it should not be mistaken for the purpose of the real Radio Orphan Annie codes. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures says those codes gave listeners a clue about what would happen in the next program. The movie turns that kind of listener ritual into a punchline about advertising. National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

Pin versus ring: what to call it
- In the film: Ralphie has a decoder pin.
- In the radio scene: the announcer tells listeners to use their decoder pins to read the code.
- In modern toy descriptions: “decoder ring” may refer to a related kind of code toy, but that does not make it Ralphie’s prop or establish an item as an authentic replica.
