Droid Life said eligible users could rent any movie on Google Play for $0.99, including available 4K rental options. The report gave no expiration date, and there is no evidence the promotion has returned as of August 2026. Google now directs movie rentals to Google TV and YouTube.
What the $0.99 Google Play deal offered
Droid Life reported that a red promotional banner appeared in Google Play and offered eligible users a $0.99 rental. The report described the deal as covering any movie and said 4K rentals were included at that price. Those details reflect the publication’s account of the promotion; its coverage does not establish a complete list of eligible titles, regions, or exclusions. Read the December 26, 2018 report.
The offer was account-dependent, rather than a guaranteed price for every Google Play customer. The report did not document an official Google promotion policy or specify taxes, a geographic scope, or a precise expiration date.

How redemption worked in 2018
These are the steps reported at the time, not instructions for Google TV’s current interface:
- Open Google Play on a phone or desktop.
- Look for the red promotional banner near the top of the page.
- Select Redeem.
- After redemption, check the rental price before checkout; the report said eligible rentals, including available 4K options, were reduced to $0.99.
Who could use the promotion?
Droid Life observed that the offer appeared unavailable to people using a “Google Apps account,” while a personal Google account successfully redeemed it. That is an observation from the 2018 report, not a confirmed universal Google rule. A managed work or school account may behave differently from a personal account, and the promotion may also have depended on account targeting or region. The report does not establish why some accounts did not see the banner.
Is the deal still available?
No current evidence supports treating the 2018 promotion as active. Its original report is dated December 26, 2018, and gives no current redemption window. Do not expect the old banner or $0.99 price to work now. For a current rental, find the title in Google TV or YouTube and verify the price and quality shown before paying; both can vary by title, region, and account.
Google’s movie storefront has changed since the promotion. Google announced that Google Play Movies & TV would no longer be available for new transactions on the Google Play website or Android TV devices. Google’s current help guidance points users to Google TV and YouTube for buying and renting movies. Google’s announcement about changes to Google Play Movies & TV and Google TV’s current movie guidance describe the transition and available destinations.

How to rent and find a movie now
Google TV
In the Google TV app, search or browse for a title, open its details page, and choose Rent if that option is available. On a Google TV device, search for the movie, open its details, review the available ways to watch, and select the rental option. Google’s instructions are available in its Google TV rental and purchase help.
YouTube and your library
Google also identifies YouTube as a place to rent or buy movies and access the resulting library. Sign in with the same Google account used for the rental. Depending on the device, country, and app, the movie may appear in YouTube’s library, the Google TV app, or a TV’s Shop or Library area rather than in the old Google Play Movies & TV app. Availability varies by region and device. See Google’s help for finding purchased and rented content and its device and availability information.

What “4K included” did—and did not—mean
The 2018 report said available 4K rental options received the same promotional price. That does not establish that every movie had a 4K version, or that every renter could stream one. Resolution depends on the title’s available formats, the quality purchased, compatible playback equipment, and the connection. Google says playback cannot exceed the purchased quality or the device’s capabilities; its current guidance calls for compatible 4K Google TV or Android TV hardware and roughly 15 Mbps for 4K playback. HD or 4K availability also depends on title licensing and the device. See Google’s video quality guidance.
The deal report makes no claim about HDR or Dolby Vision. A $0.99 price alone would not establish either format, nor guarantee 4K output on a particular screen or playback route.

Rental windows, downloads, and buying later
Check the title’s rental period
Google says most rentals last 30 days from the rental date, but the title’s details page contains the applicable Rental Period. The viewing window after playback starts follows that title’s terms, so check them before renting and begin watching when ready. A rental is temporary access, not a permanent purchase. See Google TV’s rental guidance and Google Play’s rental-period help.
Download for offline viewing
Google allows a rented video to be downloaded to one device at a time. If you remove it from that device, Google says you can download and watch it on another supported device. Mobile-data downloads may incur carrier charges. Downloads remain subject to the rental terms and Google’s supported apps; they are not permanent or transferable video files. Google’s offline viewing instructions explain the limits.

A rental fee does not become purchase credit
If you rent a movie and later decide to own it, Google’s Android TV guidance says you must wait for the rental to expire before buying that title, and the rental cost cannot be applied toward the purchase. Google’s Android TV help covers that restriction.
