His recollection shows the movie drew on a real experience, but it does not establish that the game was common in restaurants.
What is “The Game” in Waiting?
The 2005 comedy follows staff at the fictional Shenanigan’s restaurant. Its “Game” is a prank in which one worker tries to get another to look at his genitals. A contemporary Los Angeles Times review describes the successful player mocking the target and assigning kicks based on how difficult the ruse was.
What did the director say about real-life play?
In a 2014 Hollywood.com interview, McKittrick said he had not made the idea up from nothing. He recalled that coworkers at Steak and Ale, a restaurant where he worked, played a game of exposing their genitals to one another. He also described the film’s broader restaurant setting as informed by his own restaurant jobs.
That is the writer-director’s first-person recollection of a real instance. It supports saying the film had a real-life basis; it does not show that the practice was a standard restaurant custom, how many workplaces it reached, or whether the movie’s added rules were used outside the film.

Did people outside restaurants play versions?
A 2006 AnandTech forum thread includes users reporting that acquaintances played versions of the game. The thread starter clarified that the group they knew was not in food service. Other participants said they had not heard of it or had not encountered it in restaurants.
These are dated, unverified anecdotes, not a survey. They show that people reported versions in other settings, but cannot establish how widespread the game was. The available accounts provide no reliable prevalence figure.
