The familiar black tips are on Pikachu’s ears. Creator Atsuko Nishida discussed the ear markings and the tail as separate design choices; she said the tail was intended to express lightning.
Was Pikachu’s tail ever black?
In the standard design, Pikachu’s tail does not have a black tip. The Pokémon creators’ interview explains the black ear tips, but does not identify a black tail marking. That answer is limited to the official sources cited here; it does not rule out every fan drawing or variation in every adaptation.
Why does Pikachu have black ear tips?
In Pokémon’s 2018 interview with Pikachu’s creators, character designer Atsuko Nishida said of the ear tips, “I think that is a vestige from when he was dumpling-shaped.” The black markings she described are on the ears—not the tail.
Ken Sugimori noted in the same interview that the original Game Boy did not display color and that the design’s coloring was likely made easy to express in black and white. That monochrome context does not establish that Pikachu once had a black tail.

What did the creators intend for Pikachu’s tail?
Nishida described the tail as a separate design element: “I wanted to include some parts that expressed lightning—since Pikachu is an Electric-type—so I created this design.” The official Pokédex describes Pikachu’s tail as bolt-shaped and says it can use the tail to strike opponents. That entry supports the shape and function, not a detailed color specification.
What about Pikachu’s heart-shaped tail?
There is an official tail-shape variation: the Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! story page says a female partner Pikachu has a heart-shaped tail tip. It is a shape difference, not evidence of a black tail tip.

Why might people remember a black tail?
A likely explanation is that the memorable black ear tips have been mentally transferred to the tail, perhaps reinforced by memories of early monochrome Game Boy graphics. That is a plausible interpretation of the design history, not a measured explanation of how people form the memory.
