No. Groundhog Day is set in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, but the town square seen in the film is Woodstock, Illinois. The production also filmed in other places, including Chicago, Cary, Illinois, and the Pittsburgh area.
Where was Groundhog Day filmed?
Woodstock, Illinois, supplied the film’s principal small-town setting. The Library of Congress identifies Punxsutawney as the story’s setting, while the American Film Institute (AFI) and the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation identify Woodstock as a filming location. The Library of Congress essay and the Advisory Council’s Woodstock profile distinguish the fictional Pennsylvania setting from the Illinois filming location.
Woodstock’s Historic Square District is the recognizable town center in the movie. The shorthand “filmed in Woodstock” is useful, but it does not mean the entire film was shot there.
Why did the production choose Woodstock?
Director Harold Ramis said the crew wanted a town center that would look right on camera. AFI summarizes his explanation, describing Woodstock as “the classic small town of the imagination.” AFI’s film entry also notes that the Woodstock opera house served as the exterior and interior of the Pennsylvanian Hotel.

In commentary quoted by Woodstock Groundhog Days, Ramis explains that Punxsutawney did not have the kind of camera-friendly town center the production wanted, so the filmmakers used Woodstock’s square instead. The available accounts support that explanation; they do not establish that a permission dispute forced the production to move.
How does the movie’s ceremony square differ from the real one?
The film stages its Groundhog Day ceremony on Woodstock’s central square. Ramis’s reproduced commentary says the real ceremony takes place in a park outside Punxsutawney. The production built a pavilion on Woodstock Square modeled on the Punxsutawney pavilion, adapting the event’s look for the movie rather than reproducing its actual location.

What other places were used in production?
AFI records principal photography from March 16, 1992, in Woodstock through June 10, 1992, in Chicago. It also identifies additional production sites:
- Woodstock: The opera house was used for the Pennsylvanian Hotel, and the Tip Top Café was built on the town square.
- Cary, Illinois: A bedroom interior was constructed in a warehouse.
- Pittsburgh area, Pennsylvania: A second unit filmed exteriors there.
- Chicago: Principal photography concluded there.
These locations are why the clearest answer is that Woodstock stood in for Punxsutawney’s town center, not that every scene was filmed in Woodstock.
