Justin Baldoni’s legal team alleged that Ryan Reynolds’ Nicepool character in Deadpool & Wolverine mocked Baldoni. That allegation appears in the account of the dispute, but it is not a court finding about who inspired the character or why. The available reporting also does not substantiate a new Nicepool-specific revelation from Baldoni.
What was alleged about Nicepool?
Nicepool, played by Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine, became part of the wider legal dispute surrounding It Ends With Us after Baldoni’s side argued that the character referenced and mocked him. A federal court decision recounts that allegation as part of the pleaded narrative; it does not determine that Nicepool was based on Baldoni or establish the character’s intent or development. The court decision should therefore be read as describing a party’s claim, not endorsing it as fact.

Baldoni’s legal team also pointed to perceived similarities and credits, including the “Gordon Reynolds” credit for Nicepool and a credit acknowledgement in It Ends With Us. Variety reported these as arguments made by Baldoni’s side in connection with a subpoena dispute over Marvel material—not as proof that the character was modeled on him. Variety’s coverage likewise does not turn the alleged connection into an established fact.
Did Baldoni share new Nicepool details?
The reviewed coverage does not document a new, verified Nicepool-specific disclosure by Baldoni. Forbes reported that Baldoni and his wife spoke publicly after the settlement, but its timeline does not establish that Baldoni newly confirmed Nicepool was based on him or supplied new details about the character’s creation. Forbes’ timeline supports distinguishing post-settlement public comments from a specific new revelation about Nicepool.

How Nicepool fits into the It Ends With Us case
The underlying conflict grew out of the production and promotion of It Ends With Us. Blake Lively alleged harassment and retaliation; Baldoni denied wrongdoing and filed counterclaims. Different parts of the litigation ended in different ways: some claims were dismissed, while claims that had been headed toward trial were resolved in a settlement. Those outcomes should not be collapsed into a single ruling that either side’s overall account was proven.
Dismissals and the settlement
Associated Press reporting says Baldoni’s countersuit was dismissed in 2025. It also reports that Lively’s federal sexual-harassment claims were rejected on independent-contractor grounds, while her retaliation claim had been headed for trial before the parties settled. The settlement terms were not publicly disclosed in the cited AP account. AP’s report on the settlement also quoted the parties’ joint statement saying they “remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.” That statement was the parties’ own, not a judicial conclusion.

AP reported that Baldoni’s lawyer said the settlement resolved the matter without Baldoni or his company paying any of the $300 million Lively had demanded. That is counsel’s characterization; it does not disclose the full settlement terms or amount to a court finding about payment.
The later legal-fee ruling
The settlement did not end every court proceeding. In a later fee ruling, Judge Lewis J. Liman awarded Lively $363,245 in attorneys’ fees and $44,206 in costs after she sought $8 million. AP described the award as limited to costs associated with defending against defamation claims under the relevant California law. It was a partial fee award, not a judgment awarding her the amount she had requested. AP’s coverage of the fee ruling reports the request and awarded amounts.
