What the headline meant
The claim referred to the film’s limited theatrical sing-along screenings on Saturday and Sunday, August 23–24, 2025. It was a weekend box-office comparison, not a claim that the film had begun a broad, ongoing theatrical run or led theaters over its entire release.
TechCrunch described the result as a preliminary estimate and noted that the weekend had no major new releases. Its headline was about Netflix having the weekend’s biggest movie in theaters—not about KPop Demon Hunters setting a record for all streaming titles. Apple’s F1 had opened higher earlier that summer. TechCrunch’s August 24, 2025 report put the preliminary estimate at $18–20 million.
How much did it make at the box office?
The Associated Press reported that rival studios estimated domestic ticket sales at $16–18 million, with some estimates reaching $20 million, from 1,750 theaters. Netflix does not report its theatrical ticket sales, so those figures should be treated as industry estimates, not an official Netflix gross or an audited final total. The AP figure concerns the domestic box office; it is not a worldwide gross. The Associated Press report also quoted movie consultant David A. Gross describing the screenings as “a completely unique two-day musical event.”

The estimates differ by source: AP reported $16–18 million, with some estimates as high as $20 million, while TechCrunch cited a preliminary $18–20 million range. They are not interchangeable exact totals; both were estimates for the event weekend.
What happened during the theatrical event?
Netflix’s retrospective says the August 23–24 event included more than 1,000 sold-out screenings in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The event used a sing-along version of the film. Netflix says that version began streaming on the service on August 25, 2025. Netflix Tudum’s event overview describes the theatrical run as limited.

The film had been released on Netflix on June 20, 2025. The theatrical weekend came roughly two months later, making it a short event engagement rather than a conventional theatrical run measured across many weeks.
How does the box office fit its wider popularity?
The theater estimate is only one measure of the film’s reach and should not be combined with streaming minutes, soundtrack plays, or merchandise sales as if they were ticket revenue. In a 2026 anniversary retrospective, Netflix reported that the film generated 20.5 billion U.S. viewing minutes in 2025, citing Nielsen end-of-year data, and that its soundtrack had reached 15 billion worldwide streams. Netflix also reported more than 1.6 million copies sold of For the Fans (KPop Demon Hunters) across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Spain. These are separate measures with distinct scopes, not box-office receipts. Netflix’s anniversary retrospective provides those figures.

What is the film about?
KPop Demon Hunters follows K-pop performers Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who lead double lives as demon hunters protecting their fans from supernatural threats. Netflix says the film was directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation. Sony Pictures Animation’s film page identifies it as a Netflix film.
