Dividing those amounts gives a 140-to-1 ratio. But these are reported figures, not verified payroll records—and contemporaneous reporting noted disagreement over whether Carrey’s deal was really worth $7 million.
How much did Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reportedly earn?
| Actor | Reported amount | What the reporting says |
|---|---|---|
| Jim Carrey | $7 million | The Washington Post reported in March 1994 that New Line Cinema had signed Carrey to what was said to be a $7 million deal. The amount was disputed by people close to production. The Washington Post, March 1994 |
| Jeff Daniels | About $50,000 | A 2014 Washington Post account of the sequel’s press tour reported Daniels’s pay for the first film at about $50,000, attributing the detail to the Farrelly brothers. The Washington Post, November 2014 |
Those two reported amounts yield the familiar comparison: $7 million divided by $50,000 is 140. It is a comparison of the reported figures, not proof of each actor’s final compensation.

Why the $7 million figure is not settled
The 1994 Washington Post report described the $7 million as the amount Carrey was said to have been signed for, but also reported disagreement among people close to production. Some believed he would more likely take home more than $4 million; others maintained that a bidding war after Ace Ventura: Pet Detective had pushed his price to $7 million. The article therefore supports describing it as a reported deal, not a confirmed net payment.
Later accounts repeated the $7 million and roughly $50,000 figures. The Washington Post’s 2014 coverage attributed the comparison to the Farrelly brothers’ comments during the sequel’s press tour. Business Standard republished an ANI report that attributed the amounts to Bobby and Peter Farrelly in a Hollywood Reporter interview. Business Standard, November 2014

Why one report says 150 times
The Business Standard story contains an arithmetic inconsistency: its headline says Carrey earned 140 times more, while its body says 150 times. The same story lists $7 million and $50,000; those amounts divide to 140, not 150. The headline’s ratio is the one consistent with the listed figures.
