Jim Caviezel will not reprise Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ, Mel Gibson’s sequel to The Passion of the Christ. CBN News reports Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen has been cast as Jesus; TheWrap also reported the recasting. Neither report establishes why the role changed hands.
Who is playing Jesus in the sequel?
Jaakko Ohtonen is reported to be playing Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ. CBN News named Ohtonen in its 2026 coverage, while TheWrap reported that Caviezel would not return. The casting is based on media reports; no official casting announcement is established by those reports.

Why isn’t Jim Caviezel returning?
The available reports do not explain why Caviezel is not returning. They provide no verified statement from Caviezel or the filmmakers giving a reason. It would be speculation to attribute the recasting to a disagreement, a personal decision, or a production choice.
Why earlier stories said Caviezel would return
The reporting changed over time. In January 2025, coverage described Gibson as planning to bring Caviezel back, with de-aging technology discussed. Later reports said Caviezel would not return and named Ohtonen for the role. The earlier account described the plan as reported at that point; it does not establish why the casting changed.
