A 2017 report attributed an uncertain “I don’t know” to One-Punch Man illustrator Yusuke Murata; a 2024 article later characterized the debate as settled by creator ONE, but did not identify or link the interview behind that claim. The evidence supports a more careful conclusion: fans can argue the matchup under chosen rules, but the sources do not establish an official answer.
What did Yusuke Murata say about Goku versus Saitama?
A September 5, 2017, ComicBook.com report says Murata was asked during a livestream whether Saitama could beat Son Goku. The report gives his answer as “I don’t know.” It also says the response was translated by a Reddit user, so this is a secondary account of a fan-translated livestream answer, not an independently verified transcript.
That reported answer is uncertain, not a verdict. It does not say that Goku wins, that Saitama wins, or that the characters are equal. The same report describes Saitama as wanting an opponent who can challenge him and missing the thrill of battle. That is useful context for his character, but it does not determine how he would fare against Goku.
Why did a later article call the debate settled?
A 2024 OtakuKart article presents a more conclusive claim: that ONE described Saitama as a “gag” character and that this settles comparisons with Goku. On the page reviewed, however, the article does not identify or link the interview, give its date or venue, or provide a direct quotation from ONE. Its headline and interpretation therefore do not verify a creator ruling.

The difference matters. A report saying a creator gave an uncertain answer and a later article interpreting an unspecified interview as decisive are not equivalent evidence. The available accounts do not show that ONE or Murata named a canonical winner.
Why the story premise is not the same as a fight verdict
Calling Saitama a “gag” character, or pointing to the comedy and premise of One-Punch Man, describes a way to read the story. It is not itself a feat that can be compared with Goku’s demonstrated abilities. Conversely, a list of combat feats may not capture a character whose role is partly to parody the conventions of escalating fights.

That leaves readers with different questions rather than one settled test:
- Feats-based matchup: Which versions of the characters count, what abilities have they actually demonstrated, and what conditions govern the fight?
- Narrative comparison: Should each character’s role and the intended tone of their series determine the outcome?
- Canon question: Is there an official crossover or shared continuity that gives a result? The reviewed sources establish no such ruling.
Those approaches can produce different arguments. A story premise should not be silently treated as a combat statistic, and a cross-franchise hypothetical has no shared rules unless participants agree on them.

What Murata’s Dragon Ball admiration does—and does not—show
A separate 2017 ComicBook.com report describes Murata’s admiration for Dragon Ball and his discussion of drawing Goku. That supports a connection of inspiration and appreciation; it is not evidence that he chose Goku or Saitama as the winner.
For readers who want to understand Saitama’s story and characterization, ComicBook.com describes One-Punch Man as beginning as ONE’s webcomic and later being adapted into a manga with ONE and Murata. That background helps explain the character’s narrative context, but reading the manga does not supply a canonical answer to a matchup with Goku.

So, was Goku vs. Saitama settled years ago?
Not by the evidence in these reports. The 2017 account attributes “I don’t know” to Murata, with the caveat that it relays a fan translation. The 2024 article makes a stronger claim about ONE without surfacing the underlying interview on the page reviewed. Neither establishes an official creator verdict, and the sources do not prove that no creator has ever commented elsewhere.
The matchup remains an open cross-franchise debate. Any useful answer should state whether it is judging feats, narrative intent, or some agreed combination—and specify the versions and conditions being compared.
