Part of Get Out was inspired by a real incident: Jordan Peele said the film’s opening scenario alludes to Trayvon Martin. That connection applies to the opening, not to the film’s full supernatural plot, which Peele did not present as a factual reenactment.

What real incident inspired the opening of Get Out?

In a 2017 interview with the Criterion Collection, Peele said he added several scenes while filming, including an opening that alludes to Trayvon Martin. He described the scenario as “a black man walking fearfully through a white neighborhood.” Read Peele’s interview with the Criterion Collection.

The link is specific: Peele identified the opening neighborhood scenario as an allusion to Martin. He did not say that the film’s central horror story recreates Martin’s case.

Was Get Out based on a true story?

Not in the sense of being a literal account of real events. The film is a 2017 horror-thriller written and directed by Peele; its fictional plot draws on real racial anxieties and experiences rather than retelling a single incident from beginning to end. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment lists the film and its home-video formats.

Peele described the film’s wider context in terms of race, profiling and the disproportionate incarceration of Black men. In his Criterion conversation, he recalled beginning work on the project after Barack Obama’s election, amid the claim that the country had “solved” racism and no longer needed to discuss it. In a later account of a 2017 screening conversation, Vanity Fair reported that Peele called this attitude the “post-racial lie.” Read the Vanity Fair account.

What did Peele say about the film being “a true story”?

In a 2017 GQ interview, Peele joked, “Yes—this movie is a true story,” while responding to a question about similarities between the premise and his marriage. He immediately clarified: “This is not the story of my marriage at all.” The joke is not evidence that the film’s plot is autobiographical. Read the GQ interview.

Why does the opening allusion matter?

The opening places the film’s fictional suspense in a recognizable social experience: the fear of being treated as out of place or threatening in a white neighborhood. Peele described that kind of anxiety as part of his own experience, telling The Guardian: “A fairly consistent part of my experience is worrying about how I’m going to be perceived in the ‘wrong’ neighbourhood.” Read the Guardian interview.

That context helps explain the film’s connection to real life without collapsing the distinction between its social themes and its invented horror plot. Peele’s direct attribution supports the Trayvon Martin allusion in the opening; it does not establish that the rest of the story is based on one real case.
