Donald Trump was unharmed after a Secret Service agent fired at an armed man near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sept. 15, 2024. Later accounts clarified that the man, Ryan Wesley Routh, did not fire and did not have Trump in his line of sight. The early phrase “multiple gunshots fired” described breaking news, not shots fired by Routh at Trump.
What happened at the golf course?
Trump was golfing at Trump International Golf Club when a Secret Service agent saw a rifle near the tree line by the sixth hole and fired at the armed man. The man fled; authorities later arrested him after a witness helped identify his vehicle. Trump was reported safe and unharmed. CBS News’ account of the incident and the Justice Department’s indictment announcement describe the event and its early federal allegations.
At a Sept. 15 briefing, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw estimated that Trump was 300–500 yards from the armed man. That was Bradshaw’s approximate estimate, as reported by CBS News, not a surveyed distance.
Who fired the shots?
The initial campaign statement said, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity,” and early headlines reported shots fired near the course. Subsequent accounts clarified that the Secret Service agent fired and Routh did not. They also reported that Routh did not have Trump in his line of sight. CBS News’ reporting relayed both the campaign’s initial statement and the later clarification.

What happened to Ryan Wesley Routh?
Indictment in 2024
On Sept. 24, 2024, a federal grand jury indicted Routh, including on an attempted-assassination charge. That charge was an allegation at the time, not a finding of guilt. The Justice Department’s announcement explicitly noted that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said then: “Violence targeting public officials endangers everything our country stands for, and the Department of Justice will use every available tool to hold Ryan Routh accountable for the attempted assassination of former President Trump charged in the indictment.” The statement described the indictment-stage charge; the later jury verdict established the outcome. DOJ’s indictment release
Conviction and sentence
On Sept. 23, 2025, a federal jury convicted Routh on all five counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and firearms offenses. On Feb. 4, 2026, the Justice Department announced that he was sentenced to life in prison plus 84 months. These are the adjudicated outcome and sentence documented in the DOJ conviction release and DOJ sentencing announcement. The cited sentencing release does not establish whether an appeal was filed or decided, so the sentence should not be described as appellate-final.
