The story also changed: although Padukone initially described it as a true story about Sapna Didi, Bhardwaj later said the screenplay was not a biopic and had moved far from its source.
Was Deepika Padukone actually in a Sapna Didi film?
Padukone was announced as a lead in 2017, alongside Irrfan Khan. At that point, coverage described the proposed film as a Sapna Didi project, with Vishal Bhardwaj producing and Honey Trehan directing. The announcement confirmed casting plans, not a completed or released film. The Indian Express reported the announcement on 24 August 2017.
In a PTI interview published by The Indian Express on 11 February 2018, Padukone said, “It is based on Sapna Didi, I don’t know what the title is at the moment. It is a true story. It is an incredible story, her transformation is amazing.” That was her description of the planned role at the time—not evidence that she later portrayed Sapna Didi in a released movie. Read the interview report.
What did Vishal Bhardwaj say about the story?
On 22 February 2018, Bhardwaj clarified that the project was not a biopic of the real-life figure named in early coverage. He said, “I would also like to clear that the film is still untitled and is not based on Rahima Khan/Sapna Didi’s life,” adding, “Hence, it’s definitely not a biopic.” His comments described a screenplay that had evolved substantially, rather than confirming Padukone’s earlier framing as the final account of the film’s story. Hindustan Times reported his clarification.

The source story—and how the screenplay changed
Bhardwaj said the project began from “Femme Fatale,” a story in S. Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, but that the story and screenplay had taken on a new identity and shape. The book is useful literary context for the project’s origins, but it should not be treated as an official film tie-in or as proof that the planned screenplay remained a direct adaptation.
Who was Sapna Didi?
Reports about the proposed film attached Sapna Didi to a story of revenge and the Mumbai underworld. The Indian Express’s 2018 account called her Ashraf Khan and described a reported narrative involving her husband, Dawood Ibrahim and Hussaid Ustara. Those are details reported in entertainment coverage; they are not independently established here as a definitive biography.

There is also a naming discrepancy in the contemporary coverage: The Indian Express report identifies Sapna Didi as Ashraf Khan, while Bhardwaj’s statement refers to Rahima Khan/Sapna Didi. The available accounts do not resolve that difference, so the names should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as interchangeable or settled.

The project was postponed in 2018 while the lead actors recovered from health issues, according to Bhardwaj’s statement reported by Hindustan Times. That describes the history of this announced project; it does not establish whether a later, different production might use a related character or idea. Read the retrospective.
